PINOY PRIDE REGISTERS DOUBLE DIGIT TV RATINGS By Rene Bonsubre, Jr. PhilBoxing.com Fri, 18 Jan 2013 Despite the fact that AJ Banal lost to Thai Pungluang Sor Singyu, the seventeenth edition of ?Pinoy Pride? landed at the number one spot on Philippine television with a 19.1% national rating. The October 20, 2012 title fight card held at the Mall of Asia Arena surpassed the previous high of 16.2 percent registered by Pinoy Pride XV which was headlined by Jason Pagara?s revenge knockout win over Rosbel Montoya of Mexico at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel. Pinoy Pride XVI (Milan Melindo vs Jean Piero Perez, Aug. 18, 2012) came in a close third at 16%. These figures underscore the growing popularity of the fight cards presented by ALA Promotions and their effort to win over new fans to the sport. During the press conference and official launching of the WBO world title bout between Donnie Nietes and Moises Fuentes of Mexico for PINOY PRIDE XVIII, ALA Promotions Pres. Michael Aldeguer talked about the partnership of his company with media giant ABS-CBN and his company?s continuing success in bringing in more commercial sponsors. ?Banal?s loss motivated me to work harder,? Aldeguer said, ?And when a Filipino fighter loses here at home, it gives credibility to our fight cards, that Filipino boxers don?t just automatically win. But, if we don?t promote and develop our talented boxers here, we will lose them to Top Rank and Golden Boy.? Aldeguer emphasized that ALA Promotions will promote promising boxers from other stables, not just the ALA Gym. He gave credit to Manny Pacquiao and Nonito Donaire for carrying Philippine boxing to greater heights. He also talked about his negotiations with Zanfer Promotions which eventually led to the WBO Champion vs Champion match-up between lt.flyweight chmp Nietes and minimumweight champ Fuentes. Tecate Cerveza will be one of the sponsors for this title bout. The members of the Cebu media were a bit surprised that a foreign brand was enthusiastic in sponsoring a fight here. It is public knowledge that Filipino boxing promoters have trouble convincing sponsors for financial backing to stage world title bouts in the country and to support boxers other than Pacquiao. Aldeguer echoed the sentiment of those who have religiously followed the local fight game even during the pre-Pacquiao years; what is happening now in Philippine boxing is unprecedented and a huge opportunity to gather more fans and elevate the sport.
