NBA -- Subway Series: Basketball Edition By Reynaldo Seno PhilBoxing.com Tue, 27 Nov 2012 NEW YORK -- When they talk about a subway series in New York, it usually involves this city's major league baseball teams -- the New York Mets and the revered New York Yankees. But a subway series of a different kind takes place tonight in the Big Apple. This one, though, is NBA style -- Knicks versus Nets, who just migrated from New Jersey to Brooklyn to take a slice of New York's massive market pie. Eat your hearts out, Yankees and Mets. Tonight's hoops skirmish at the $1 billion edifice known as Barclays Center is about slam dunks and fastbreaks, not pitanches and homers. And no, the Knicks and Nets aren't meeting this early to exchange early Christmas gifts. They want to punch each other in the mouth as both teams are separated only by one game in the race to win the Atlantic Division. The Knicks, no thanks to a minor road skid during the Thanskgiving holiday, are 8-3 while the Nets are a nose behind at 8-4. The usual suspects are Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony, who has been hot as a New York summer lately, piling 66 points his last two games. Aiding Anthony is point guard Raymond Felton, an assist machine with a decent jumper, and streak-shooter J.R. Smith. Other notables are center Tyson Chandler and Steve Novak. The Nets, meanwhile, rely heavily on their ace point guard Deron Williams and shooting guard Joe Johnson. Brook Lopez will have his hands full against the Knicks' bigs while 6-foot-10 power forward Chris Humphries is expected to play a pivotal role. This is just one of four Knicks-Nets encounter this season. Should be a good one. (Reynaldo Seno) Click here to view a list of other articles written by Reynaldo Seno. |
