NBA -- Knicks' unbeaten record in peril

PhilBoxing.com

NEW YORK. Five-oh, sounds good. Real good.

But when the unbeaten New York Knicks visit the AT&T Center in San Antonio Thursday night (Friday morning in Manila), there's a more than decent chance that the Knicks will leave Texas with the first blemish in their immaculate record.

That's because the 5-0 Knicks will face the powerhouse Spurs, who wields a mighty 7-1 won-lost record. If the Spurs defend their homecourt and win their third straight, they will move up to 8-1 and own the NBA's best record overall.

The Spurs are fresh on the heels of a thrilling 84-82 conquest of the struggling Lakers at the Staples Center in Los Angeles last Wednesday night. And they will be a handful to handle, what with the ageless Tim Duncan leading the way with his 18.8 points and 9.6 rebounds per game average. Under Duncan's watch the Spurs have won four NBA titles.

San Antonio also draws power from All-Star point guard Tony Parker, who is dishing 7.6 assists per game along with 13.6 points. Manu Ginobili has been struggling of late, but the whirling dervish from Argentina can spark an offense without a moment's notice. Other Spurs notables include Danny Green, Stephen Jackson and Gary Neal.

Besides the 6-foot-11 Duncan, size isn't a problem with San Antonio as the Spurs have 6-foot-11 Tiago Splitter, 6-foot-10 Matt Bonner and 6-foot-8 Boris Diaw.

Riding on the wave of a five-game winning streak, the Knicks will rely heavily on Carmelo Anthony, who is averaging 26.8 points and shooting 45.3 percent from the field. The leader of the Knicks pack, Anthony also pulls 7.4 rebounds an outing.

But New York is by no means a one-man army.

The Knicks have J.R. Smith, the ex-Nugget who is burning the scoreboards with 18.2 markers a night. And then there's Raymond Felton, running the New York offense with the quiet efficiency of a grizzled veteran. Felton, a University of North Carolina alum who makes $3.4 million this season, is averaging 14 points and 6.4 assists an outing.

San Antonio versus New York is a battle between the best in the East and the toughest in the West.

Should be a fun watch. (Reynaldo Seno)
