MANDAUE CITY, CEBU ? The drizzles failed to dampen the enthusiasm of the Cebuano boxing fans who gathered to watch the fights at the Mandaue City Plaza Square on a Saturday night. Philippine light flyweight champion Jerson Mancio of the ALA Gym easily disposed of Nikong Calamba in the main event.

Calamba was deposited into Mancio?s corner after three hard hooks to the body in the opening round. Referee Tony Pesons reached the ten count at 1:02. Mancio (photo above) improves to 16W-3L-3D, 7 KO's while Calamba drops to 5W-10L-1D,3 KO's. Mancio?s title was not at stake for this fight.

Jimmy Paypa beat veteran Eric Barcelona by TKO before the start of the ninth round of a bruising contest. It was a back and forth slugfest waged by two southpaws but Barcelona was fading in the eighth round which ended in a wrestling sequence with both boxers rolling on the canvas. A tired Barcelona then signalled to Referee Teddy Alivio in between rounds that he did not want to continue.

Reymund Tabogon won by TKO before the start of the fifth round against Lowell Saguisa. The fight was fought on even terms until Saguisa started to fade prompting his cornerman to tell Referee Ben Necesario that his boxer has had enough.

Arjan Canillas and Bonnie Makiling exchanged power shots for six entertaining rounds. Then in the seventh, Canillas stunned Makiling with a right hook to the temple then followed it up with two hard hooks to the jaw that slammed Makiling hard on the canvas.
Referee Tony Pesons started to count but realized that the glassy eyed Makiling could no longer get up and promptly signaled the end at 1:59.

Lito Dante beat Gilbert Magos by TKO in the sixth and final round. Magos was out of gas and receiving unimpeded head shots prompting Referee Teddy Alivio to stop the fight at 2:04.

In the opening bout of the evening, Bryan Samson was more effective at close quarters and won by unanimous decision against Peter Aldrin in a four rounder. The scores ? 40-36, 40-36 and 39-37.

This ?free to the public? fight card was presented by ALA Promotions and Cobra ?Tunay na Lakas? Energy Drink. Among the faces in the crowd was WBO light flyweight world champion Donnie Nietes. The fights were supervised by Rolando Mendoza of GAB-Cebu.
