DANNY GARCIA FINISHES THE GREAT ERIK MORALES IN FOUR ROUNDS
By Rich Mazon PhilBoxing.com Sun, 21 Oct 2012
Brooklyn, NY ? Danny Garcia 24-0 (15 KOs) may have just ended the career of one of the great fighters of the squared circle when he viciously knocked out Erik Morales 52-8 (36 KOs) in the fourth round of their scheduled 12 round championship fight here at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
Garcia was the younger, faster and the stronger fighter from the opening bell and he used all three assets to his advantage in finishing his veteran counterpart.
Garcia went to Morales? body and unleashed a cracking left hook in the fourth that spun his foe around.
Morales was toppled outside the ropes and tried to get up but referee Benji Estevez mercifully stopped the fight after the knock down at the 1:23 mark of the said round.
Morales who tested positive for the banned drug Clenbuterol twice before the match was cleared by the NYSAC after a third test came negative. Morales and his camp blamed the positive results from consuming contaminated meat prior to the fight.
Morales was slow, less active and obviously less physically fit than Garcia and in his past fights in his illustrious career as a boxer. The veteran of 60 fights clearly bore the sign of a fighter that may have stuck around too long. And it showed tonight as he suffered one of his most lopsided defeats in the ring.
Morales announced that this is his last fight in the United States but hinted at another try in his hometown of Mexico.
?This is my last fight in the United States. I will have one more in Tijuana,? Morales announced after the bout.
?I came to fight. I was ready, but this is a sign that it is over,? added a dejected Morales.
Maybe, it really is over for one of the great fighters of the sport.
