PhilBoxing.com

George Groves vs. Francisco Sierra (Light Heavyweights)

Round One: Groves comes into the fight undefeated in his first 14 bouts. Groves lands a huge uppercut but Sierra is not backing up. Both fighters are not moving around much and are trading combinations in the center of the ring. Close round. Groves? uppercut may have won the round but this could be the start of a very entertaining fight. Groves 10-9.

Round Two: Groves is showing some legitimate power with the right hand. Groves landed a great uppercut to the body, which stopped Sierra on his tracks. Sierra is hanging in there tough and continued to pressure Groves, but I don?t know how much longer Sierra can continue to take clean right hands from Groves. Groves 10-9.

Round Three: Groves is trying to catch Sierra coming in with his right hand. Groves suffered a cut over his right eye, which motivates Sierra to up his aggression. The cut could be a game changer if the cut was caused by a punch. Groves lands a good right hand that staggered Sierra, but Sierra came back with solid combinations of his own. Good action round. Groves? suffered a bad cut on his right eyebrow in that round. Groves 10-9.

Round Four: Doctor checks Groves? cut prior to the start of the round. Crowd boos hoping that the fight continues, which it does. Sierra landed a big wide uppercut in the middle of the round. Groves caught Sierra with a clipping right hand as Sierra backed straight out. Another close round as both landed solid punches, but Groves? activity likely won him that round. Groves 10-9.

Round Five: Sierra found a home there with his straight right. Groves continued to land his right hand on Sierra. Both are landing hard solid punches, but neither has looked close to getting knocked down. Sierra staggered Groves a bit late in the round. Sierra?s best round so far. Sierra 10-9.

Round Six: Sierra?s straight right forced Groves into the ropes, which gave Sierra and opportunity to land his combinations. Right-Left-Right-Left combination sent Sierra to the canvas. Sierra could not recover and ate two more vicarious right hands and fell into the ropes. His corner quickly threw in the towel and the fight ended in round six. Great finish. Groves withstood some major heat from Sierra, but when he finally hurt Sierra, he finished him with a highlight reel type KO. The pro-Mexican crowd applauded the Englishman Groves for the great effort. Good fight.

Hugo Centeno vs. Ayi Bruce (Jr. Middleweights)

Round One: Centeno comes in undefeated in his first 14 fights. Centeno is displaying an excellent jab that kept Bruce at bay. Centeno trapped Bruce in the corner is landed several combinations to the head and body. Centeno?s superior speed, length, and jab helped him dominate that first round. Centeno 10-9.

Round Two: Centeno continued to control Bruce on the outside with his ability to control distance with the jab. Bruce was unable to get past the jab and work inside, where he can be most effective. Not very much action in that round as Centeno easily won the round. Centeno 10-9.

Round Three: The constant barrage of combination is starting to take its toll on Bruce. However, Bruce was able to land a couple of right hands to back up Centeno a bit. Maybe Bruce can build off of those right hands, but Centeno dominate the rest of the round. Centeno 10-9.

Round Four: Not much action going on in this round. Centeno?s punches are not as strong as they were early in the fight. A lot of missing by both fighters. Centeno landed a jab that snapped Bruce?s neck back and could have won him that round. Centeno 10-9.

Round Five: Centeno is backing up most of the round and trying to keep Bruce at bay with the jab. Bruce was able to slip the jab once and land a right hand. Centeno is simply outboxing Bruce at this point. Centeno 10-9.

Round Six: Centeno seemed content to fight with mainly his jab and controlling distance. Round played out similar to the previous rounds. Bruce is a very limited fighter. Crowd boos after the end of the round. Centeno 10-9.

Round Seven: Bruce has not lost his confidence yet, but Centeno is continuing to land his jab while mixing in some body shots. Bruce is trying to land one KO shot with the right but nothing else. Crowd boos again at the end of the round. Centeno 10-9.

Round Eight: Last Round. Both fighters touched gloves. Bruce was finally able to close the distance and, no surprise, he was effective. Bruce was able to land some solid hooks as Centeno tried to just finish out the round, knowing he?s ahead on the cards. Round ends and the crowd booed Centeno because he couldn?t finish out a very limited opponent in Bruce. Bruce 10-9.

Judges score the fight 79-73, 80-72, and 80-72 for the winner by unanimous decision, Hugo Centeno.
