Cancer survivor to cover Pacquiao fight
By Robbie Pangilinan PhilBoxing.com Tue, 08 May 2012
Three years ago, Wendell Rupert Alinea was diagnosed with leukemia, or cancer of the blood cells. Today, he was granted his US Visa to cover the title bout between Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao and undefeated American Timothy Bradley on June 9.
Alinea, a senior photographer of leading sports web industry player sportsmanila.net, was pronounced a hopeless case of leukemia. His doctors said there is no cure. His father, veteran sports journalist Eddie Alinea, sold all their property and let go of all their investment to save Wendell.
Family, friends, PBA press, celebrities, church members, even strangers, all prayed for Wendell. Just this January, doctors in Makati Medical Center said Alinea is cancer-free.
Wendell, enjoying his new lease in life, assisted his father in Pacquiao?s Baguio camp and Manila training before the People?s Champ flew to LA last Saturday.
The Big C survivor will cover the awaited fight with the Sportsmanila team headed by its founder Robbie Pangilinan, the chairman of the Sports Communicators Organization of the Philippines (SCOOP) JB Baylon, and Eddie.
?I thank God and everyone for prayers,? said the young Alinea.
The 73-year-old Alinea, on the other hand, said that there is nothing more he can ask for, but to see his son healthy, alive and happy. He also extends his gratitude to those who supported his campaign for his son. #
