FILIPINA FIGHTERS FALTER, SETTLE FOR BRONZE MEDALS

Flyweight Alice Kate Aparri and bantamweight Nesthy Petecio of the PLDT-ABAP National Team faltered against top opposition in the semi finals of the 6th Asian Women's Boxing Championships at the Buyant Ukhaa Sports Palace in Ulan Bator and had to settle for bronze medals.
Five-time world champion Mery Kom of India overwhelmed Aparri for the fourth time to score an easy 21-6 victory although ABAP executive director and Philippine delegation head Ed Picson reported that Aparri succumbed to stomach cramps and fatigue and was never in the contest.
A large band of Indian supporters cheered Kom who skillfully took advantage of the ailing Baguio lass Aparri who put up a brave front but was visibly off.
Petecio was also was unable to show her true form as she struggled against a fleet-footed Keija Luo of China in another semi final clash. Petecio engaged Luo in several torrid exchanges but the Chinese girl proved too good and went on to win 10-5.
India and China continued to dominate the championships with each country sending seven fighters into the finals with Kazakhstan and host Mongolia having to settle for two finalis with Thailand and Tajikistan fighters earning one slot each in the finals.
