EARLY UNDERCARD RESULTS FOR THE SUPER SIX FINALS IN ATLANTIC CITY By Rich Mazon PhilBoxing.com Sun, 18 Dec 2011 Atlantic City, NJ -- The night of the Super Six Finals here in the Jersey Shore opened with a battle of the big boys in the heavyweight division featuring Bowie Tupou (21-1, 16KOs) of Los Angeles, CA against Donnell Holmes (33-1-2, 29KOs) of Ivanhoe, NC. Tupou dropped Holmes int he 7th round of the scheduled 10 rounder with a short right hook. Holmes got up and beat the 8 count and mounted his own rally in the late rounds of the fight to try to catch up on the cards but the knockdown was the deciding factor in the fight. The judges scores were 95-94 twice and 96-93 all in favor of Tupou. Former Super Middleweight prospect and now Light Heavyweight staple Edson Miranda (34-6, 29KOs) of Buenaventura, Columbia scored the first knock out of the night with a 5th round TKO of Kartz Kariuki (24-9-2, 19KOs) of Tampa, FL. A left hook from Miranda rattles Kariuki in the second round which threw him off balance. He stayed upright and responded with shots of his own in the same round. Kariuki finished the round strong as he landed heavy on Miranda. That seemed to have woken up the Columbian as he excelled in the next two rounds ending with a beatdown in the 5th. He dropped Kariuki with a hard left in the round and finished that off moments after with a series of thundering hooks that staggered kariuki. Referee Allan Huggins stopped the fight at the 2:15 mark of the 5th earning Miranda his 35th win and an impressive 30th KO. The third bout of the night was another Light Heavyweight fisticuff between young prospects Cornelius White (17-1, 15KOs) of Houston, TX against Yordanis Despaigne (9-1, 4KOs) of Coral Gabies, FL. White was cut on his left eye by a legal punch from Despaigne in the initial round of the match which bothered but did not reduce White's efficiency in the bout. Despaigne suffered a similar cut from a clash of heads int he succeeding round which turned both boxers' white trunks to pink from the blood that oozed from their cuts. Both fighters figured in good exchanges in the fight with mostly infighting with White doing the most work of the two Light Heavyweights. He went to the body and followed that up with punches in Despaigne's head. Despaigne who was bothered by the cut in his head was outworked and outlanded by the Texan fighter. White earned a 6 round UD victory with scores of 59-55 in two cards and a shut out score of 60-53 in one card. Kelli Brook (25-0, 17KOs) who is one of two British fighters figuring out in tonight's event at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City made good in his US debut against Luis Galarza (18-2, 14KOs) of Artioch, TN.
