TYSON-HOLMES BATTLE HEADLINES AKTV "SUPER FIGHTS" By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Wed, 14 Dec 2011 AKTV IBC 13 follows up its highly successful telecast of "Super Fights" featuring the Muhammad Ali - Joe Frazier "Fight of the Century", with the heavyweight battle between champion Iron "Mike" Tyson and former champion Larry Holmes on Wednesday at 9:00 p.m over IBC 13. Also featured will be the classic encounter between Mexican hero Ruben Olivares making his first defense of the WBA featherweight title against classy Nicaraguan Alexis "Explosive Thin Man" Arguello on November 23, 1974. Tyson was making the fifth defense of his WBC heavyweight title, the fourth defense of his WBA crown and the second defense of his IBF belt at the Convention Center in Atlantic City on January 2, 1988. The 38 year old Holmes was returning to the ring after an absence of almost two years only o be humiliated by Tyson who was some 17 years younger. Holmes working behind his vaunted left jab and staying out of trouble was holding his own in the first three rounds, connecting with som good shots of his own prompting two of the three judges to score round three for the former champion. Tyson exploded with three devastating right hands in round four sending Holmes crashing to the canvas three times forcing referee Joe Cortez to call a halt to save Holmes from a further bettering. The Arguello-Olivares title fight at the Forum in Inglewood, California some 14 years earlier was a classic battle between two of the greatest fighters of all-time. In fact Arguello, together with the Philippines Gabriel "Flash" Elorde was voted the WBC's best junior lightweights of the organization's first 20 years in a star-studded ceremony in New York. In a slam-bang encounter Olivares connected with a solid punch in round 12 and Arguello staggered backwards as though he was hurt. Olivares sensed an opportunity to knock out Arguello and went for broke throwing punches from all angles, in the end punching himself out. The fight took a dramatic turn in the 13th round when the lanky Arguello nailed Olivares with a short left uppercut that dropped the champion who beat the count but was pulverized by Arguello who finished him offal 1:20 of the 13th round during the era when title fights were fought over 15 rounds.
