Well-known Filipino promoter Sammy Gello-ani has received the coveted World Boxing Organization award as ?Promoter of the Year? in an awards ceremony on the second day of the WBO Convention in Puerto Rico. The awards at the convention were presented by WBO president Francisco ?Paco? Valcarcel. Valcarcel began his annual report by highlighting the achievements of a roster of great Filipino fighters. He said ?we have five champions, four men and one woman. We congratulate the Philippines for the great achievements through our organization (the WBO).? The Filipino world champions are led by pound for pound king and reigning WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao who battles world lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez in Las Vegas on November 12 and WBO/WBC bantamweight champion Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? Donaire who successfully defended his title with a twelve round shutout over two-division WBO champion Omar Andres Narvaez of Argentina at the Madison Square Garden Theater last Saturday. Pacquiao has won eight world titles in eight different weight divisions while Donaire won the IBF/IBO flyweight title with a stunning 5th round knockout of Vic Darchinyan on July 7, 2007, the super flyweight title, grabbed the WBA super flyweight interim title with wins over Rafael Concepcion and Hernan Marquez and the WBC/WBO bantamweight crown with a spectacular 2nd round knockout of Mexican veteran Fernando ?Cochulito? Montiel last February 19. The other two champions are current flyweight champion Brian Viloria who became a three-time world champion when he won the WBO flyweight title with a twelve round unanimous decision over Mexico?s Julio Cesar Miranda on July 16. Viloria previously won the WBC light flyweight title with a 1st round knockout of Eric Ortiz on September 10, 2005 and then went on to win the IBF light flyweight title with a cracking 11th round knockout of Ulises Solis on April 19, 2009 at the Araneta Coliseum. Donnie Nietes also won his second world title when he scored a unanimous twelve round decision over WBO light flyweight champion Ramon Garcia Hirales in Bacolod City last October 9. The female champion is WBO super bantamweight Ana Julaton who won the interim title with a ten round split decision over Maria Elena Villalobos on June 30, 2010. Gello-ani who is back in the limelight has over 30 promising fighters he handles including world rated Froilan ?Sniper? Saludar regarded as a future world champion and the comebacking former WBO super flyweight champion ?Marvelous? Marvin Sonsona.
