DONAIRE REMINDED OF LAST GREAT FILIPINO WHO FOUGHT AT MADISON SQUARE GARDEN
By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Thu, 20 Oct 2011
 Flash Elorde.
Nonito "The Filipino Flash" Donaire and Omar Andres Narvaez will hold a pre-fight press conference here in New York City today (Thursday) at lunchtime.
During a very enjoyable and successful visit to the Philippine Consulate yesterday, Donaire was reminded of the last time a
Filipino fought in Madison Square Garden.
That was on November 28 1966 when Gabriel "Flash" Elorde suffered the first knockout of his career in the 14th round of the WBA World Lightweight Championship bout against Carlos Ortiz of Puerto Rico. The fight was held at the old Madison Square Garden.
It was a battle of champions since Elorde was the WBC junior lightweight champion and Ortiz, the lightweight king. Elorde had been beaten by Ortiz in Manila in their first clash which ended in a 14th round TKO although Elorde had Ortiz in trouble in the 7th round but couldn't put him away.
Donaire was reminded that another "Flash" was fighting here in a fight we covered for dzHP Radio in Manila and nationwide over the Radio Mindanao Network as well as for the Philippines Herald newspaper.
While Elorde was beaten there is no indication whatsoever that Donaire will suffer the same fate as he builds his reputation as one of the top pound for
pound fighters in the world and the heir apparent to pound for pound king Manny Pacquiao.
Donaire however conceded that "its always going to be a difficult fight with somebody who is proud of his country Argentina. I know he is going to give it all he's got because he represents Argentina and he knows that I represent the Philippines and all the fans who have supported me and the boxing world."
Donaire added, "I love boxing and I want to show boxing in its true essence, in its true form and that is exciting. I'm going to do my best."
