SONSONA DROPS JACOBO IN ROUND 8 EN ROUTE TO COMFORTABLE WIN By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Sun, 16 Oct 2011 Former WBO super flyweight champion ?Marvelous? Marvin Sonsona showed he still had the skill and the ring savvy in scoring a comfortable unanimous ten round decision over reigning Mexican super bantamweight champion Carlos ?Flash of Lightning? Jacobo but it was also evident that the 20 month layoff took a toll on his timing and physical condition especially in the middle rounds. Sonsona took control right from the opening bell using his reach to advantage and catching Jacobo with stiff jabs and some solid body shots. The 21 year old southpaw rocked the head of Jacobo with a left uppercut in round two but the durable Mexican came back in round four to crack Sonsona with a left straight. Jacobo connected with some good counter-punches in round six as both fighters ended the round with a furious exchange that added to the excitement of fight fans at the Hoops Dome in Lapu Lapu City who had come to size up Sonsona on a fight card billed as ?Back With A Vengeance?. Sonsona began to pick Jacobo apart in round seven before he dropped the Mexican with a solid combination of a left uppercut and a right straight in the dying seconds of round eight. Saved by the bell Jacobo never gave up and tried his best to engage Sonsona at close quarters as the former world champion put the pressure on, trying to finish off Jacobo to please a small band of noisy supporters. But Jacobo was as tough as nails and refused to buckle, in the end catching Sonsona with a big right hand in round ten although it hardly bothered the Filipino. All three judges had Sonsona the winner. Edgar Olalo and Ben Necesario scored the fight 98-91 for Sonsona while Edwin Barrientos had Sonsona the winner 97-92. The third man in the ring was international referee Bruce McTavish. In the fight card telecast by AKTV IBC Channel 13 Sonsona said in a post fight interview that he had trained hard for his comeback fight and that he plans to continue with his career after giving it some serious thought after his 4th round knockout at the hands of WBO super bantamweight champion Wilfredo Vazquez Jr in February 2010.
