KLITSCHKO BATTERS ADAMEK TO RETAIN WBC HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE

PhilBoxing.com

WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (43-2, 40 KO?s) battered Poland?s Tomasz Adamek (42-2, 28 KO?s) to retain his title with a 10th round TKO of the hometown favorite in Wroclaw, Poland, Sunday Manila Time.

The fight was telecast on a delayed basis by AKTV IBC Channel 13.

Vitali overpowered Adamek in a title defense that was even more impressive than his brother Wladimir?s battering of Britain?s David Haye in July.

Italian referee Massimo Barrovecchio let the fight continue until he had seen enough by the tenth round to call a halt to the one-sided battering with most boxing writers believing he could have stopped the fight a few rounds earlier.

Klitschko?s jab was the dominating punch early in the fight and the 34 year old 6? 1 ?? Adamek could hardly handle the 40 year old, 6?7 ?? giant Ukraine champion?s power.

Adamek did show some courage and in the fourth round halted Klitschko?s momentum but not for long.

In round six Klitschko caught Adamek with a big right hand that sent the Polish challenger reeling backwards into the ropes which referee Barrovecchio ruled as a knockdown.

Klitschko himself stumbled onto the canvas at the end of round eight but it was not caused by a punch.

Adamek was badly beaten and having a hard time hanging on when the referee decided to stop the massacre.

Klitschko praised his smaller foe, He said ?from the beginning of the fight I knew that I would knock out Adamek sooner or later. I controlled the fight but a couple of times I hit him and I was surprised. He has a good chin.?

For his part Adamek conceded that the fight was not going his way and he ?wanted to change this fight and find a way to trick Vitali. But he?s a smart fighter and was better tonight.?

After easily disposing of the former cruiserweight and light heavyweight champion, Klitschko called out Haye who was schooled by his younger brother Wladimir last July 2 in a battle for the WBO/WBA/IBF/IBO heavyweight titles.

He was quoted by Gavin Glicksman of the British newspaper The Sun as saying ?Haye is world famous not for his boxing but f or his tongue. I want to knock him out. I?m serious and I know I can do it.?

Haye who had plans of retiring before his 31st birthday on October 13 apparently had a change of heart and said ?If I am given a rematch against Wladimir ? which I do not believe I will ? or Vitali will fight me, I will postpone my retirement for six months.?

Haye noted ?Wladimir couldn?t put me down and he had the referee, judges and fans on his side in Germany. I had no real chance. Vitali should give me the chance, if he dares. He is supposed to have a dangerous punch which I doubt.?

Haye said former heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis had influenced him to reconsider his decision to retire and claimed that Lewis had given him some pointers on how to beat Vitali like Lewis did in 2003.

However, to this day the debate rages on as to whether Lewis who was rocked in round two would have won if Klitschko did not suffer a terrible gash that bloodied his face. With blood streaming down his face the ring physician advised the referee to stop the fight which went down in the books as a TKO win by Lewis. At the time of the stoppage Klitschko was leading on the scorecards of all three judges, 56-54.
