OVERWEIGHT ROSAS DETERMINED TO HURT MELINDO By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Sat, 10 Sep 2011 Mexico?s Francisco ?Chiquita? Rosas stepped onto the scales five pounds over the flyweight limit for his WBO Intercontinental flyweight title fight against undefeated Milan Melindo when they clash in the main event of a Philippine-Mexican showdown at the Waterfront Hotel and Casino in Ceb City today. Moments later Rosas who didn't plan to try and shed off the excess weight told Cebu boxing patron Tony Aldeguer that he was not concerned about winning a regional title but was eager to hurt Melindo, beat him badly and enter the world rankings. Aldeguer would have none of it recalling that Rafael Concepcion tried the same trick in a WBA super flyweight interim title fight against Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? Donaire hoping to win and improve his standing in the world ratings. The Panamanian failed because Donaire beat him although Donaire had to be wary because of Concepcion?s weight advantage. Aldeguer threatened to withhold Rosas? purse and have him sanctioned if he didn?t try to lose some pounds so as to minimize his advantage against Melindo who tipped the scales at 111, one pound under the flyweight limit. Rosas then went to the sauna at the SM City Mall and returned to check in at 113 ? pounds. Rosas has a record of 22-8-2 with 13 knockouts and has fought five world champions in his career. One of his notable wins was in a WBA light flyweight eliminator when he beat former world champion Jose Landaeta on January 30 this year. The 23 year old Melindo who has a record of 24-0 with 8 knockouts wasn?t fazed by the tactics of Rosas and predicted he would win by a knockout and move one step closer to a world title shot. He is ranked No. 5 by the WBO, No. 7 by the WBC and No. 11 by the WBA and IBF. In the battle for the WBO Youth Asia Pacific junior welterweight title Mexico?s Rosbel ?Lobito? Montoya weighed in one pound over the limit at 141 while Jason Pagara who is ranked No. 8 by the WBO tipped the scales at exactly 140 pounds. Montoya claims to have a record of 34-4-1 with 29 knockouts and is known as a devastating puncher who is expected to give Pagara an acid test. Capping off the Philippine-Mexican showdown on Pinoy Pride VIII to be telecast on Sunday at 10:15 a.m. over ABS-CBN Channel 2 will be the much-awaited international debut of promising Genesis Servana who stakes his unbeaten 14 fight record with 5 knockouts against veteran Gerson Guerrero (37-8, 29 KO?s). A confident Servana said he isn?t awed by the experience of Guerrero a nd plans to stun the Mexican before what is certain to be a jampacked Pacific Ballroom at the Waterfront.
