PATRIMONIO, BATES HEAD PBA HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES PhilBoxing.com Thu, 25 Aug 2011 Four-time Most Valuable Player Alvin ?The Captain? Patrimonio of Purefoods and import Bill Ray Bates, nicknamed ?The Black Superman? who played for Crispa and later teamed up with Michael Hackett to give Ginebra San Miguel its first PBA championship in 1986 head the list of seven inductees into the 2011 PBA Hall of Fame. The Honors Committee deliberated on the nominees submitted by a selection committee and eventually picked seven inductees. Aside from Patrimonio and Bates, the other inductees chosen are former MVP Freddie Hubalde of the famed Crispa Redmanizers, Crispa's grandslam-winning coach Tommy Manotoc, the late Commissioner Mariano Yenko, former Mariwasa coach and national team mentor the late Valentin ?Tito? Eduque, Vintage Enterprises CEO and president Carlos ?Bobong? Velez who held the PBA television franchise for some 20 years and was cited for his major contribution in making the pro league an institution in the everyday lives of millions of Filipinos. The Honors Committee approved the seven candidates nominated by a Selection Committee which included senior broadcast and sports columnists Quinito Henson of the Philippine Star and a Solar TV analyst, PBA Press Corps president Tito Talao, TV commentator and columnist Sev Sarmenta of the Philippine Daily Inquirer, Al Mendoza of the Manila Standard, PBA Media Bureau chief Willie Marcial, PBA Operations and Technical head Rickie Santos, Ex-player representative Patrimonio with TV sports broadcaster and Inquirer columnist Ronnie Nathanielsz as chairman. The Honors committee included PBA Commissioner, Atty. Angelico ?Chito? Salud, Chairman Rene Pardo, vice chairman Atty. Mert Mondragon, past chairman Angelito ?Lito? Alvarez, former chairman Carlos ?Honeyboy? Palanca, Philippine Sportswriters Association president Teddyvic Melendres, and Senior Editors Lito Tacujan and Joe Antonio. The Hall of Fame induction will be part of what promises to be a spectacular opening ceremony of the 201102012 season under a new television partner in ABC 5 and AKTV IBC Channel 13. |
