DAVID DIAZ KO?D IN ROUND SIX OF A BRUTAL FIGHT

PhilBoxing.com

Former WBC lightweight champion David Diaz who was badly battered before being knocked out in the 9th round of a title defense against Manny Pacquiao on June 28, 2008 has seen his hopes of another title shot dashed in a brutal fight against ?Hammerin Hank? Lundy who knocked Diaz out cold in the sixth round at the Horseshoe Casino in Hammond, Indiana.

With the win the promising Lundy retained his North American Boxing Federation title in an action-packed battle that had the fans on their feet almost throughout. The 27 year old Lundy improved to 21-1-1 with 11 knockouts while the 35 year old southpaw Diaz dropped to 36-4-1 with 17 knockouts.

Both fighters started aggressively although Lundy beat Diaz to the punch and was more accurate although Diaz also got in his licks.

Diaz?s best round was the fourth when he nailed Lundy with a left cross that sent him crashing to the canvas. Diaz went after Lundy and hammered him while trapped against the ropes but in a twist of fate Diaz suffered a bad cut around his right eye which was examined by the ring doctor before the start of round five. However, shortly after the action resumed the cut started to bleed profusely.

Lundy appeared to be buoyed by the cut and caught Diaz with a cracking right hook and although the former world champion?s glove touched the canvas, the referee didn?t rule it a knockdown.

Boxing writer Bob Mutter in a special rkngside report to the Chicago Tribune said that ?After taking a vicious left uppercut and several other strong punches, Diaz was ordered to the corner to be examined again. This time the doctor took a long time before giving Diaz the green light. But he tore into Lundy when action resumed, and ended the round strong.?

Another dramatic twist happened at the 37-second mark of the sixth round as Lundy, according to Mutter, ?responded to a slow jab from Diaz with a tremendous left cross, and Diaz suddenly was plastered to the canvas. Referee Gerald Scott stopped the action.?

In a post fight interview Diaz admitted he "went too crazy. I got too excited," in the fourth round when he dropped Lundy.

Diaz ruled out retirement and said he was looking forward to a possible rematch with Lundy, adding "I think I still have two more years."

Diaz said he didn't see the punch that ended the fight. He blamed the cut on an unintentional elbow he caught in the fourth round when he was over-aggressive.
