GABRIEL PUMAR: MY EXPERIENCE WILL BEAT SALUDAR PhilBoxing.com Thu, 04 Aug 2011 Gabriel Pumar. Cebu City, Philippines - After one of his sparring sessions at the IPI Boxing Gym in Brgy. Mabolo, philboxing.com caught up with Gabriel ?Big Gunz? Pumar and talked to him about his upcoming WBO Asia- Pacific Flyweight Championship fight against Froilan ?Sniper? Saludar on August 6, Saturday at the premier resort hotel of the Southern Tagalog, Island Cove Hotel and Leisure Park. When asked what he can say about his opponent, Pumar had only one word to utter ? ?Kusog? (Strong). The native of Lapu-Lapu City, Mactan Island, Cebu confessed that he had studied the style of his younger opponent both on TV and on the video archive of the world wide web, youtube.com. After watching those fight videos, Pumar was confident that he had Saludar all figured out. However, when pressed for specifics on his game plan, he just answered ?Tan-awon lang nato sa ring sa among away? (Let us just see during the fight itself). Bonbon, as he is usually called by his family and close friends, revealed that he first learned of this title fight assignment sometime during the 3rd week of June. Immediately after this information was given to him, he did not waste any time and started his training. According to him, he had between 6-7 weeks of training for this fight. The long preparation will enable him to shrug off his ring rust after having been out of the boxing ring for over half a year. He continued that the early notice made him develop his endurance and stamina. Philboxing.com asked Pumar what will be his motivation in this fight and his reply was ?Gusto nako makabalo ang mga tawo diri sa Pilipinas nga dili pa ko laos, 25 pa akong edad ug gusto gyud ko mobalik ug modaug? (I want to let the Filipinos know that I am not yet over-the-hill, I am just 25 years old and I really want to come back and win) Pumar openly stated that his experience fighting strong fighters in South Africa and Japan will be his biggest edge against Saludar. He added that Saludar may be undefeated in 12 fights but the quality of Saludar?s opponents pale in comparison to his. He said Saludar have not experienced facing a boxer in the calibre of Japanese Daiki Kameda, who is the reigning WBA World Flyweight Champion. Daiki Kameda settled for a unanimous decision win over Pumar when they fought in a 10-round Super Flyweight contest on May 13, 2009 held at the Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan. Bonbon proudly said that everyone inside the venue expected that he will just be blown away and get knocked out by the Japanese but he surprised them by giving it his all and refused to go down. In closing, we asked Pumar what we can expect from him come fight night and he quickly answered that the boxing fans will enjoy this fight because he will not fold up and surrender like the previous opponents of Saludar. His final words were: ?Karon pa makatilaw si Saludar ug kusog nga kumo nga malipong jud sya. Modaug jud ko.? (This is the first time that Saludar will experience being hit by a strong punch that will make him groggy. I will win) |
