AJ 'Bazooka' Banal and Tyson 'The Prince of Hali' Cave both weighed in at 117 ? lbs during the official weigh-in held Friday noon at the Gaisano Grand here in Mactan Island. Banal (24W-1L-1D, 19 KO?s) will be defending his WBO Asia-Pacific bantamweight title for the second time. Last March, he knocked out Francis Miyeyusho of Tanzania in two rounds at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel. Cave (15W-1L, 5 KO's), from Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, is a WBC Continental Americas super bantamweight titlist. Romeo Jakosalem (138 lbs) will fight Eusebio Baluarte (139 ? lbs) for the vacant Philippine jr.welterweight title. The unbeaten WBO Oriental featherweight title Lorenzo 'Thunderbolt' Villanueva (20W, 19 KO?s with 1 no contest) tipped the scales at 127 lbs while opponent Eddy Comaro (24W-10L-4 D, with 9 KO's) of Indonesia weighed 126 ? lbs for their 10 round non-title contest. Michael 'Bruce Lee' Domingo weighed 121 lbs , and his opponent Richard Samosir also of Indonesia was one pound over the contracted catchweight of 121 lbs and had an hour to shed the excess weight. Domingo (40W-15L-2D, 18 KO?s) and Samosir (18W-3L-3D, 7 KO's) will also fight for ten rounds.? Also scheduled to see action are Jomar Cordinillo of Bohol (105 lbs) vs Jonathan Refugio (103 1/2 lbs) of Bukidnon (8 rounds), Albert Pagara (115 ? lbs) of Maasin City vs Jaime Alin (116 lbs) of Bukidnon (6 rounds), Jojo 'Flash' Intor (122 1/2 lbs) of Negros Oriental vs Cris Leon (123 lbs) of Bukidnon (4 rounds) and Ryan Maano (130 ? lbs) of Mandaue City vs Yoshinobu Arai (129 ? lbs) of Yokohama, Japan (4rounds). Fight time is at 6 PM at the Hoops Dome in Lapu-lapu City this Saturday, July 30. The weigh-in was supervised by Rolando Mendoza of the Games and Amusements Board of Cebu and WBO Asia-Pacific chief Leon Panoncillo. Ronnie Nathanielsz was the master of ceremonies. POSTSCRIPT: The original battle of Mactan happened in 1521. A local chieftain named Lapu-lapu routed the Spanish forces under the command of Ferdinand Magellan. Tyson Cave will try to avoid a similar fate. The host city for PINOY PRIDE VII bears the name of the famous chieftain. A popular species of Filipino fish is also named after him.
