ORCOLLO, MAZON OFF TO GREAT START IN GUINNESS WORLD SERIES OF POOL By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Thu, 14 Jul 2011 Reigning World No. 1 Dennis Orcollo and defending champion Jundel Mazon got off to a great start in the Guinness World Series of Pool 10 Ball Championship at the Mall Taman Anggrek in Jakarta. Orcollo played almost impeccable pool to rout hometown boy Sumaryadi 6-0 while Mazon, known for his awesome break had to claw back from an uncertain start to beat Indonesian rival Roy Apancho 6-4. Apancho entered the round of 32 in the 2006 World Pool Championships but was eliminated by Filipino veteran Rodolfo "Boy Samson" Luat. Orcollo, one of the top favorites for the title was relaxed and ready and punched on the slightest mistake by Sumaryadi who was totally off his game and eventually conceded the final rack after showing up late following a mandatory timeout. The match between Mazon and Apancho proved far more exciting at least for the Indonesian fans after Apanco raced to a 3-1 lead and Mazon appeared to be in trouble with the score at 4-2 in favor of Apanco.. But luck was on the Filipino?s side as a dry break by the Indonesian gave Mazon a much-needed window to display his skills as he ran off four racks in a row to win 6-4. Asked about his chances of another championship run Mazon replied ?Of course I want to win the championship again. But as you can see from the match today, it takes a combination of skill and luck in order to keep winning. Hopefully, I can sustain this momentum and at the same time get the lucky breaks I need whenever I?m in a tough spot.? Despite the morale-boosting start by the large Philippine contingent by the end of the day one Filipino is destined to be relegated to the loser?s bracket with Jeffrey ?The Bull? De Luna pitted against compatriot and Bugsy Promotions stablemate Carlo Biado. De Luna said ?It?s unfortunate that we ended up going against each other. I?d hate to see him lose but at the same time, I don?t want to go home either. These are just breaks of the game and whatever happens, we do this for the honor of our country.?
