GONZALEZ RETAINS TITLE WITH IMPRESSIVE 4TH ROUND TKO By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Mon, 11 Jul 2011 Former WBO bantamweight champion Jhonny Gonzalez who moved up to featherweight and won the WBC title with a 4th round TKO of former WBC bantamweight champion Hozumi Hasegawa of Japan, has retained his title with an impressive 4th round TKO over Tomas Villa at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. The 29 year old Gonzalez who was making his first title defense of the featherweight crown capped an impressive performance with a left hook to the body that caused Villa to slump to the canvas in pain. Villa struggled to his feet, but referee Eddie Cotton stopped the fight at 49 seconds of the fourth. Gonzalez dominated from the outset, landing combinations that gave Villa a cut above his right eye and a bloody nose. Villa was also spitting blood when he returned to his corner at the end of the fight. With the win Gonzalez improves to 49-7 with 43 knockouts while Villa of Midland, Texas fell to 23-8-4 with 14 knockouts. Gonzalez lost his WBO bantamweight title to Filipino southpaw and two division world champion Gerry Penalosa by a stunning 7th round knockout at the Arco Arena in Sacramento, California on August 11, 2007 in the Philippines vs Mexico World Cup of Boxing which the Philippines won 5-1. Prior to the title defense Gonzalez said he is yearning to be a lasting champion and that his fight with Villa will be the start of a long road of successful defenses. Gonzalez was quoted by the WBC website as saying he?s a solid champion and that he will demonstrate it against Tom?s "El Norte?o" Villa at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City New Jersey. He said "We want do a lot of defenses and not become a fleeting champion; our desire is to keep the title for long time, we had trouble to get it and now all of them want it, so we prepared ourselves very well," said the boxer who is now being coached by the experienced Ignacio Beristain. Gonzalez added "Yes there have been changes since we?re with Nacho, we are very dedicated to what we?re doing and do not want to make any mistakes and I think we have the maturity to last long.?
