Rosales vs. Vidad wins Best Fight in Argao?s ?Buhay Boksingero?

PhilBoxing.com

Argao, Cebu ? The very animated crowd at the Argao- Diosdado Macapagal Sports Complex were treated to ten highly competitive boxing matches Sunday night but it was the final fight of the evening between junior lightweights Jessie Cris Rosales of the SGG Stable and Honey Boy Vidad of T.I. Cebu Stable that got the nod for being the best.

Rosales started strong and continuously pummeled Vidad on the ropes. But Vidad fought his way out of trouble by landing hard shots of his own. Rosales built an early lead but faded in the 4th and final round as Vidad continued to stalk him. The scorecards read ? one judge had it 38-38 with two judges scoring 39-37 for Rosales handing him the majority decision win.

In the other 130 lb division match-up, Rodel Wenceslao of the Phil-Aust gym edged Joel Soterol of the RWS Gym by split decision. The scores ? 39-37 Soterol , and two judges had it 39-37 Wenceslao.

For the 120 lb division, Memar Dula of the Sta. Cruz stable caught the game but limited Khino Bandalan of Leyte with a continuous torrent of punches for a unanimous decision win.

The scores ? 40-36, 39-37 and 40-36.

A close runner up for the night?s best fight was fought between Bobby Sentillas of T.I. Cebu and GV Banares of SGG stable.

Both boxers took turns leading and countering in the opening round. They traded solid hooks in the next two rounds but the southpaw Sentillas surged in the 4th and knocked down Banares with a sharp uppercut in the dying seconds for a dramatic finish. The three judges all scored it for Sentillas - 39-36, 38-37 and 39-36.

For the 115 lb weight category, Jherpaul Valero of T.I. Cebu won by unanimous decision over Erwin Yamo of Phil-Aust gym.

The scores 40-36, 39-37 and 39-37.

Jolito Catubay of the RWS Gym won a split decision verdict over Bernard Salicinas of Leyte. Catubay scored a knockdown in the opening round. The scorecards read 38-37 and 39-36 for Catubay and 38-37 for Salicinas.

In the 112 lb weight category, Rommel Banquerigo of the RWS Stable and Ardie Boyose of SGG Stable fought to a split draw. The scorecards read 39-37 Boyose, 39-37 Banquerigo and 38-38.

Renoel Pael of T.I. Cebu Stable and Junior Salvador of the Phil-Aust gym engaged in a four round majority draw. The scores ? 39-37 Pael and two judges had it 38-38.

In the 108 lb division, Jobert Alvarez of the Donaire stable won by split decision over RJ Gonzales of the T.I.Cebu Stable in a bizarre match. Alvarez knocked down Gonzales in the first round but after a fierce exchange near the end of the round, Alvarez vomited particles of undigested food.

The fight continued and Alvarez boxed well in the second despite vomiting in his corner. In the third round, Gonzales bit Alvarez on the right ear.

Gonzales was warned by the referee. He tried to hurt Alvarez with body shots but it was not enough to erase the deficit. The scores read ? One judge had it 38-37 Gonzales and two judges had it 39-37 and 40-35 for Alvarez who continued to vomit after his win.

It was later known that Alvarez was suffering from an upset stomach hours prior to the bout. He was brought to the Argao District Hospital and treated for gastroenteritis.

The festivities were opened by Delmar Cabatas of the Sta. Cruz Gym beating Gilbert Magos of the RWS Gym by unanimous decision in a free swinging brawl. The scores 40-35 for all three judges. Magos was deducted for low blows.

Present during the event, was former two division world champ Gerry Penalosa who acted as TV commentator together with Chino Trinidad and Salven Lagumbay.

The winners last Sunday will meet in the ?Buhay Boksingero? finals for the five weight categories in July. Because the two flyweight bouts ended as draws, the finalists will be announced later and the decision will be based on their past performances in the previous three legs of the tournament.

GMA TV will be scouting for a venue, preferably indoors, in Tagbilaran City, Bohol for the championships of their reality TV series and boxing tournament. The fights are expected to be aired on GMA television in August.
