Marlon Alta wins Philippine Jr. Middleweight Championship

Marlon Alta rained punches on the head of the suddenly unresponsive Benedick Fontines midway in the 12th and final round prompting referee Ed Nobleza to stop the what has been a give and take contest for the vacant PHL junior middleweight title. The fight was held last night, 18 June, at the Elorde Sports Center in Paranaque City.
Alta took the first round by sheer volume of landed punches. Then Fontines took over the next few rounds with his harder punches to the body and head which clearly bothered Alta making the latter box and run. Alta, who was egged on by a platoon of supporters from the Navarette Boxing Stable of General Santos City, summoned all the strength he could muster to out punch the stronger punching Fontines to even up the fight going to the last two rounds.
As Alta and his supporters were ecstatically celebrating his victory, the ring physician and Fontines' handlers were scarily attending to the still limp and pale Fontines. As his condition turned for the worse, Fontines was rushed by ambulance to the nearest hospital. As of this writing, we still wait for word on Fontines' condition.
