IF HOPKINS WINS HE'LL BECOME THE OLDEST BOXER TO WIN A WORLD TITLE By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Sat, 21 May 2011 The World Boxing Council has issued a news release clarifying that should 46 year old Bernard Hopkins win over Jean Pascal in their title fight in Montreal, Canada on Sunday, Manila Time, he will become the oldest world champion. At the same time ABC 5 informed us that the Hopkins-Pascal fight card will be telecast simultaneously on the network as well as its cable station on Channel 41 beginning at 11:00 a.m. with a replay on IBC 13 at 7:00 p.m.. (Ronnie Nathanielsz) * * * The World Boxing Council would like to clarify that Bernard Hopkins will get in the ring being older than George Foreman and Archie Moore; therefore if he wins the championship he will be the oldest boxer who has won a world title. Bernard Hopkins is four months older than George Foreman when he won the title and three months older than Archie Moore, two great fighters of the past. Hopkins is 46 years and 4 months old. Jean Pascal, however, is the WBC Lightheavyweight world champion, and not only will he have the incentive of the WBC Lightheavyweight world championship, but also of fighting for the WBC Diamond belt, which has only been won by two boxers in history: Manny Pacquiao, of The Philippines, and Sergio Martinez, of Argentina. There will be a total sell-out at the arena in Montreal, Canada, where this great fight will be held this Saturday night. Joe Dwyer, NABF President, and Mauricio Sulaiman, WBC Executive Secretary, have already arrived in Montreal and will be the representatives of our organization. The ring officials appointed in perfect coordination between the WBC and the Quebec Boxing Commission will be: Referee - Ian John-Lewis, of England; Judges - Guido Cavalleri, of Italy, Anek Hongtongkam, of Thailand, and Rey Danseco, of The Philippines. It is expected that this bout has a very high television rating, due to both titles that will be on the line in it, as well as due to the great quality of both fighters. This fight is being promoted by Golden Boy Promotions and Groupe Yvon Michel Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. |
