Elorde Jr has retained his WBC International super flyweight title with a smashing 1st round TKO over Mexico?s Everardo Morales in Kabasalan, Zamboanga Sibugay. Elorde told the Daily Inquirer that Lopez hit Morales caught Morales with a vicious left cross in the first round and dropped the Mexican twice. Lopez went after Morales, caught him on the ropes and nailed him with a flurry of punches giving international referee Bruce McTavish no choice but to stop the fight. With the win Lopez improved his record to 16-3-1 with 12 knockouts while Morales dropped to 34-17-2 with 23 knockouts. It was the 34 year old Mexicans third successive TKO loss. He suffered a 7th round TKO defeat at the hands of champion Hugo Fidel Cazares in a WBO world title fight on July 3, 2010 and on March 26, 2011 lost by a 3rd round TKO to Jose Salgado in a clash for the vacant North American Boxing Federation title. Lopez, on the other hand was coming off a 1st round knockout of veteran Noel Sungahid last December 11, 2010 after losing a 5th round technical decision to Mexico?s popular Juan Jose ?Goofy? Montes on October 2, 2010. In that fight Lopez was dropped in the first round but opened up a nasty cut over the right eye of Montes in round three which was caused by a punch. However, referee Frank Gentile claimed it was an accidental head-butt and deducted a point from Lopez. When the fight was stopped because of the bleeding from the cut all three judges had Montes the winner 48-45. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. |
