JOAN TIPON MAKES IMPRESSIVE BOXING COMEBACK By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Thu, 12 May 2011 Joan Tipon. Doha 2006 Asian Games gold medalist Joan Tipon has made an impressive comeback by entering the finals of the tough Sydney Jackson Memorial Tournament in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Tipon whose career took a downward spiral forcing him to retire after the 2009 Southeast Asian Games displayed his old form and fire in his semi final bout against hometown boy, Ismoil Haitbaev to win by a comfortable 4-1 margin. The 29 year old Tipon was joined in the finals by light flyweight Mark Anthony Barriga who, according to ABAP executive director Ed Picson ? again wowed the crowd with his cat-quick moves and constantly outwitted Alisher Maxmudov of the host country, 4-1.? Picson informed the Philippine Daily Inquirer that ?although the Uzbek briefly held the lead in round one, 1-0, the 17-year-old Davao del Norte native quickly overcame the deficit and never looked back.? Tipon who hails from Bacolod City had retired because of a shoulder injury after the 2009b SEA Games but he showed ?grim determination and superb physical conditioning in subduing another Uzbek, Ismoil Haitbaev, in similar 4-1 fashion? according to Picson who was elated by the performance of the two boxers who are members of the national pool. He said "While our main purpose In coming here was to evaluate the skill and conditioning level of our boxers, we are happy that Mark and Joan made it to the finals. This is testament to our effective mix of experience and youth,? he said. Picson added that this tournament being only the first international foray of the men's team for the year, and the fact that they got this far amidst quality competition from known boxing countries as the hosts, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, ?proves that we are on the right track." The ABAP executive said ?We still need to tweak our boxers' conditioning and mental toughness but we are addressing that with our strength & conditioning coach Pio Solon and a sports psychologist who will be named soon." The Nationals' trip to this ancient city was bankrolled by PLDT with clothing provided by Accel and vitamins by Clusivol. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. |
