Ano-os outguns Serrano in Medellin By Rene Bonsubre, Jr. PhilBoxing.com Fri, 29 Apr 2011 Medellin, Cebu ? RJ Ano-os of the RWS Gym and Edison Serrano of the Omega Boxing Gym traded blow for blow from the opening bell. Serrano was felled by a punch that landed below the belt in the second round but it only served to intensify the action even further. The boxers engaged in fierce non-stop exchanges but Ano-os landed the cleaner blows down the stretch. The scorecards after six rounds ? 59-56, 58-56 and 58-56 for Ano-os. The appreciative crowd gave a resounding applause to the main event fighters for their effort. In the supporting main event Julius Alcos of the Omega Boxing Gym beat Erwin Pulvera of Consolacion, Cebu by unanimous decision after eight rounds. Alcos landed hard hooks to the ribs and knocked Pulvera down in the first round. Pulvera survived the initial onslaught and stormed back in the second round with well timed counters. But Alcos? persistent body attack sapped Pulvera?s strength and he could not land any significant punches to turn the tide in his favour. The scores ? 80-71, 79-72 and 79-72. Rajah James Tan-awon of Princessa Bulakna, Siquijor won by majority decision over Jessie Comedia of the Phil-Aust Gym. The scorecards after four rounds ? 38-38 and two judges scored it 39-37 for Tan-awon. POSTSCRIPT: My father witnessed his first live boxing match in Medellin when he was in fifth grade, just a few years after the end of World War II. The fight was held in the middle of a tennis court and there were no ropes to separate the boxers from the spectators. Philippine boxing has come a long way since then. Lifelong boxing fans like my father are now enjoying the fruits of Manny Pacquiao?s unprecedented success.
