ASENJO LOOKING TO UPSET GARCIA IN WBO TITLE FIGHT

PhilBoxing.com

WBO Oriental minimum weight champion Rommel "Lirttle Assassin" Asenjo (20-2, 16 KO?s) is looking to upset reigning World Boxing Organization Interim champion Raul ?Rayito? Garcia when they clash in Tijuana, Mexico on April 30.

Asenjo is currently training at the ALA Gym in Cebu under the supervision of trainers Noli Pinol and Dante Lerio with some inputs from ALA Promotions strength and conditioning coach Pio Solon.

Asenjo?s manager, former North Cotabato governor Manny Pinol said that the US Embassy last Tuesday approved the request of ALA promotions for the issuance of transit visas for Asenjo and trainers Pinol and Lerio. The team including former governor Pinol is scheduled to leave for Tijuana via San Francisco on April 23.

ALA Promotions holds the promotional rights for Asenjo and two other boxers from Pinol?s Braveheart Boxing Club.

Boxing patron Tony Aldeguer told the Inquirer that Asenjo was capable of pulling off an upset against Garcia because the Filipino is ?pretty strong and a fighter who could brawl.?

The fight against Garcia will be for the world title which is expected to be vacated by reigning champion Donnie Nietes who has held the crown for almost four years and plans to move up to light flyweight. In his first bout at 108 pounds Nietes scored a smashing 1st round knockout over Mexico?s Romeo Vazquez at the La Salle Coliseum in Bacolod City last Saturday.

Garcia won the IBF minimum weight title via a split decision over Florante Condes on June 14, 2008 in his hometown of La Paz, Mexico despite being dropped by the hard-hitting Filipino southpaw in the 12th round.

Garcia who has a record of 29-1-1 with 17 knockouts is also a southpaw like Asenjo. He lost his IBF title by a unanimous twelve round decision to South Africa?s Nkosinathi Joyi on March 26, 2010 before winning the WBO Interim title with a twelve round unanimous decision over undefeated Colombian Luis de la Rosa in Colombia last October 30.
