Mayol continues training at Wakee Salud's Gym for WBA interim title bout By Rene Bonsubre, Jr. PhilBoxing.com Tue, 12 Apr 2011 Cebu City ? Former WBC lt.flyweight champion Rodel Mayol has been training in Cebu for almost two weeks after his brief training stint in Baguio City with Team Pacquiao. Mayol is preparing for a big fight in Thailand this June 3 against Wisanu Kokietgym for the WBA interim light flyweight world title. Mayol sparred with undefeated prospect Fernando "Batang Bato" Ocon (6W-0L, 1 KO) Tuesday afternoon and then followed it up with abdominal strengthening exercises at Rex ?Wakee? Salud's gym. ?I'm still above the light flyweight limit but one of the reasons why I started training early is that I don't want to suddenly go down in weight which weakened me in the rematch with Omar Nino.? Mayol told philboxing after his training session. Last November, Mayol fought as a flyweight and stopped Pompetch Twins Gym of Thailand in seven rounds at the Ynares Sports Complex in Pasig City. The 29 year old Mayol (27W-5L-2D, 21 KO?s) is upbeat about his chances for another title. ?I've seen Wisanu fight. He lost to Z Gorres in Mandaue. But I know I'm fighting in his turf so I need to be ready.? Wisanu (38W-7L-2D, 12 KO?s) fought in Cebu way back in 2005, when he he lost to Z Gorres by 4th round TKO at the Mandaue City Sports Complex. Back then, he was known as Wisanu Por Nobnum. He now holds the PABA lt.flyweight title and has beaten two Filipinos, Rodel Tejares and Michael Rodriguez in his last two fights. Promoter Sammy Gello-ani facilitated this title bout but the Kokiet Group of Thailand will be promoting this match. Gello-ani however believes Mayol still has what it takes to be champion. ?He has a good attitude and he trained early.? Gello-ani told philboxing, ?He deserves this shot. I am confident of his chances.? Click here to view a list of other articles written by Rene Bonsubre, Jr.. |
