UPDATES ON PACQUIAO?S TRAINING By Eddie Alinea PhilBoxing.com Thu, 31 Mar 2011 BAGUIO CITY ? Manny Pacquiao resumed roadwork yesterday, took his breakfast mid-morning and overslept till 2 p.m, coming late by almost two hours in his scheduled workout in the gym. The culprit was the taping for a commercial of a credit card, the latest product he is endorsing, that lasted for almost midnight Tuesday. Chief trainer Freddie Roach did not mind though such a distraction as he punished the WBO world welterweight for 12 rounds doing the mitts that ended with almost Pacquiao dead tired. There was no scheduled sparring yesterday. He was scheduled to reinforce Team Pacquiao?s basketball team later in the evening. The GenSan Warriors are entered in the on-going basketball tournament here named after him, the ?Pacquiao Cup?. Earlier in the day, the eight-division belt-holder ran five miles inside the hilly Sta. Lucia Subdivision to the amazement of strength and conditioning coach Alex Ariza. It was this stamina-building roadwork that Pacquiao missed Tuesday. ?I just cannot stop being amazed about where he?s getting his strength. Imagine seeing him running through a steep 45-degree hill for a mile on the way to the Cooyeesan Hotel,? Ariza told this writer with glow in his eyes. ?And to think that he just finished running the routine five miles we prepared for him to do,? he added. ?That only showed how strong he is,? Roach butted in. ?Well, as I have been saying, even days before we plunged into sparring, Manny had already regained his power and speed.? ?The only minor problem confronting us at this stage of preparations are his timing and how to keep his distance from his opponent,? Roach said. The 32-year-old ?Fighting Congressman?, the new moniker Pacquiao wants him called in reference to his election as member of the House of Representatives representing the province of Sarangani, is staking his 147-pound crown against hard-hitting Shane Mosley May 7 in Las Vegas. ?But we intend to make improvement on that aspects before we leave for L.A. this coming Saturday,? Roach disclosed in reference to the team?s departure for Los Angeles Saturday where he will resume training at the Wild Card Gym. ?The idea is to reach near perfect condition before leaving Manila and polish everything when we get to L. A.,? he explained. Pacquiao resumes sparring today with welterweight contender Shawn Porter aiming to challenge him anew into a brawl for three rounds before exchanging blows with lightweight David Rodela for another two rounds. Porter and Rodela had two rounds each against Pacquiao Tuesday. ?We increased the frequency by two rounds from four last Tuesday, precisely so we can attain our target,? Roach said. The team descends to Manila Friday evening in time for the departure to L.A. the following day. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Eddie Alinea. |
