VILLANUEVA AND ASENJO SIGN UP WITH ALA PROMOTIONS By Rene Bonsubre, Jr. PhilBoxing.com Mon, 21 Mar 2011 Cebu City ? The power punching duo of Lorenzo Villanueva (19W with 18 KO?s -0L-1 NC) and Rommel Asenjo (20W-2L, 16 KO?s) formally signed their multi-year fight contracts under ALA promotions. The event was held during a press conference Monday noon at the Diamond Suites and Residences. Villanueva, who goes by the ring moniker ?Thunderbolt?, is a pure puncher reminiscent of the late Edwin Valero. He holds the WBO Oriental featherweight belt which he won by 10th round TKO over Eric Canoy in 2009. Villanueva also hold KO wins over former world title challenger Balweg Bangoyan and Eric Macas. It was Macas who gave Villanueva a ?blemish? in his record in 2009 when their first encounter ended in a five round no contest. Villanueva traces his roots to Negros Occidental and fights out of the Braveheart Boxing Club of North Cotabato. He will see action in PINOY PRIDE 5 in a title defense against Tanzanian Ramadhani Shauri (9W-2L-1D, 6 KO?s). Asenjo, who goes by moniker ?Little Assassin?, will fight Raul Garcia (29W-1L, 17KO?s) of Mexico this April 30 for the Mexican?s WBO interim minimumweight title this April 30 in Mexico City. What makes this fight doubly important is the fact that the regular champion, Donnie Nietes of the Philippines, plans to fight for a title at light flyweight and the interim champion could be promoted as the world champion in the 105 pound division. Former North Cotabato Gov. Manny Pinol will retain his status as the manager of both boxers. Asenjo, who traces his roots to Iloilo, said he will try his best to win the title for the country. His stablemate Edrin ?The Sting? Dapudong has a one win-one loss record in Mexico. Asenjo said he did not have a conversation with Dapudong regarding his Mexican experience but he has seen fight films of Garcia and knows how to handle him. Both Asenjo and Villanueva were thankful for the opportunity to fight under ALA Promotions. The organization?s President and CEO Michael Aldeguer said that the Philippine boxers are now fighting in an unprecedented time; two Pinoys are among the best in the world pound for pound and the rest of the world respects Filipino boxers.
