BOXING MOURNS THE DEATH OF RODRIGO SALUD By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Tue, 08 Mar 2011 Rodrigo Salud. World Boxing Council president Don Jose Sulaiman who, the moment he heard of the critical condition of his longtime friend and mentor, eminent lawyer Rudy Salud, informed us that he was visiting the Virgin of Guadalupe Shrine "to pray for my dear friend Rodrigo." The moment we informed Don Jose that Salud had passed away on Monday afternoon in Manila he sent his deepest condolences and that of the WBC to Salud's family and the Filipino people. In a statement from the WBC headquarters in Mexico, Sulaiman said the WBC regrets to inform the boxing world of the passing "of our dear friend Rodrigo Salud who was the Secretary General of the World Boxing Council in the 60's when the president of our institrution was Justiniano Montano Jr, also from the Philippines." Sulaiman noted that Salud was "the lifetime honorary secretary general of the WBC." A press release by the WBC noted that "it was our current leader Jose Sulaiman Chagnon who succeded Mr. Salud as the secretary general when Professsor Ramon Velazquez was president." The WBC officially decreed three days of mourning kin the boxing world and offered its condolences to Salud's family and friends. The World Boxing Council said Salud who president Sulaiman often mentioned as his mentor was "one of the most distinguished leaders of the World Boxing Council based on principles. impartiality, perseverance and a string attachment to WBC rules. It noted that Montano and Salud, who were also chairman and secretary general of the Games and Amusements Board were elected to the WBC's top positions "in difficult times when the organization became inactive for almost a year when Luis Spota was president." The statement said the WBC President, the Board of Governors and all members of the institution "wish that this great Philippine?s soul rests in everlasting peace and hopes that God will give a prompt resignation to such deep sorrow to his family and boxing and basketball fans; as Mr. Salud was a leader of the sport of basketball for many years."
