LETTER TO THE EDITOR: HENSON RESPONDS TO ROACH DENIAL ON DRUG TESTING REQUEST FOR MOSLEY PhilBoxing.com Wed, 22 Dec 2010 Joaquin Henson. Hi Dong, I hope it's not an imposition to ask if this email could be shared in Philboxing. This has to do with Freddie Roach denying he will insist on a drug test for Mosley. I had interviewed him in Manila last week and wrote a story saying he would insist on a drug test. Freddie was later quoted as saying it would be hypocritical for him to insist on a drug test because of his position denying Mayweather's demand for a similar drug test on Manny. But personally, i don't think it would be hypocritical because Manny has no history of taking drugs while Mosley admitted in a US grand jury testimony that he has used performance enhancing drugs. So there would be a basis to ask for a drug test on Mosley. I'd like to believe that Freddie and I are good friends and whenever he comes to Manila, I try to see him and we meet to chat one-on-one. Freddie and I go back a long way -- from when I was the only Filipino sportswriter at ringside covering Manny's fight against Ledwaba in 2001 with Freddie in his corner for the first time. When Freddie visited last week, we spent two hours chatting about everything and anything. It was a lot of fun. Many of the things we talked about were off the record, haha. We talked about our families and even our love life. But yes, I asked him if he would insist on a drug test for Mosley. He even said drugs might have made Mosley freeze after hurting Mayweather in the second round of their fight. He also mentioned Mosley's history of using steroids and even said look at his body. I wouldn't misquote Freddie -- he's a real friend and I wouldn't want to put words in his mouth. After I read Freddie's denial, I texted Freddie and asked him if he really wouldn't insist on a drug test. I said sorry if I misquoted him but recalled he said he would insist on a drug test during our conversation. He replied right away and texted, "normal testing." I took it to mean Freddie will not want extraordinary testing for Mosley like Mayweather once asked of Manny, as in Olympic-style. As I said, Freddie's a good friend and i would never misquote him or put words in his mouth or deliberately put him in bad light. When i do a story based on an interview, I don't imagine things being said nor do I lead anyone to say something. There's nothing wrong or criminal about demanding a drug test on Mosley because of his history. I think Zab Judah once asked for it, too. Mosley said he would agree to a drug test for as long as Manny does also. Why not? we just want to be assured of a fair playing field. Thanks for giving me a chance to express my side. By the way, I may be reached on Facebook -- type in "joaquin henson" and I'll add anyone who wants to exchange notes. Merry Christmas to all. * * * Click here to read the original article by Joaquin Henson. Click here to read Roach's denial. |
