Pacman now a SCOOP member

PhilBoxing.com

LOS ANGELES, CA (via Pera Padala) ? Seven-division world champion
Manny Pacquiao has been accepted as member of the Sports Communicators Organization of the Philippines (SCOOP).

Pacquiao?s admission as member of the group of sports editors, sportswriters, columnists and photographers was formalized yesterday after his four-hour workout at the Wild Card Gym here where SCOOP President Eddie Alinea presented to him his ID.

Pacquiao, who writes a regular column at Abante, expressed elation over his becoming a SCOOP member even as he thanked Alinea and the organization for recognizing him as a a bona fide member of the Fourth Estate.

?Matagal na talagang gusto kong maging bona fide sportswriter kasi sumusulat naman ako ng column sa Abante pero nahihiya akong mag-apply (I really had wanted to be a bona fide sportswriter for a long time now since I write regularly a column for Abante, but I am ashamed to apply) ,? he said after receiving his ID.

?Kaya nagpapasalamat ako sa SCOOP at kay Mr. Alinea sa pagkilala sa akin (That?s why I would like to thank SCOOP and Mr. Alinea for recognizing me as one of their own).?

?Umasa kayong ako?y magiging mabuting miyembro ng SCOOP at susundin ko ang lahat ng alituntunin sa pagsusulat ng malinis at kaayaayang column tungo sa paglalahad ng katotohanan sa mga nangyayari hindi lamang sa boksing, in particular, kundi sa sports, in genera (Rest assured that l will be an asset to the association and will follow the rules in writing clean and wholesome columns in expressing my views, not only on boxing issues but sports, in general).?

?Isang karangalan para sa akin ang maging miyembro ng tinatawag na Fourth Estate (It?s certainly an honor to become a member of the so-called Fourth Estate),? he said.

SCOOP actually had played a major role in Pacquiao?s pursuit for boxing greatness. In 2003, he was boycotted by the Philippine
Sportswriters Association, which, that year, chose him as its ?Athlete of the Year.?

He, however, failed to attend the Awards Night citing sickness as
reason. It was found out later though that he was just playing billiards in his hometown in General Santos City.

This prompted the PSA leadership to ban him from appearing in
newspapers. A pooled editorial denouncing his action was ran by all major newspapers.

None of his activities as a boxer appeared in the print media for
months even as a fight against Serikzhan Yeshmagambetov was set at the Luneta on July 26 of the same year.

Fearing perhaps that the bout would lose at the gate since it had not been publicized. His handlers approached Alinea appealing for him to appear as guest in its weekly SCOOP Sa Kamayan forum two days before the actual fight.

Thinking about the honors he had, by then, brought to the country as a flyweight and super-bantamweight champion, Alinea agreed to have as one of the guests along with basketball legend ?Robert Jaworski and Ramon Fernandez.

The rest, of course, is history. He won back the sympathy of the
entire sports media as he proceeded to claim five more world championships becoming the first man ever to win seven world titles in as many divisions.

That was before he also became the first fighter to win a seat in Philippine Congress.

Meanwhile, the People?s Champ willingly signed the official uniform of sportsmanila.net, along with Roach and conditioning coach Alex Ariza.

Sportsmanila.net, a key player in the Philippine sports web industry, supports Pacquiao and publishes updated and relevant stories about him and his upcoming fight from veteran sports journalists like Eddie Alinea.
