Pacquiao Training Updates By Eddie Alinea PhilBoxing.com Tue, 21 Sep 2010 An hour and-a-half training session highlighted by a seven-round work on the mitts that pleased chief trainer Freddie Roach marked the first day of what is scheduled four-week build up program for seven-division champion Manny Pacquiao yesterday at the Elorde gym in Quezon City. Even his soon-to-be sparmates Glen Tapia and Michael Medina were amazed by how the newly-elected Congressman of his province Sarangani displayed punching power the first time the Filipino icon stepped on the ring since March when he won by decision over Joshua Clottey at the huge Dallas Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. ?He?s still far from being in shape, but that?s okay with me in a first day of training. It?s a very typical opening day of training for Manny,? Roach who just arrived in Manila Sunday with Tapia and Medina in tow told media men after the session. ?The timing was not there, but the power in his hands was very evident and so was his speed. But I?ll keep on pushing and pushing him as out game plan is reached,? Roach said. ?He?s very strong as before.? ?Amazing,? Tapia, an up-and-coming Dominican Republic welterweight who is still undefeated in his initial pro fights, could only murmur. ?He?s pretty good, I tell you. Medina, 24 who at over six-feet resembles Mexican countryman Antonio Margarito, whom Pacquiao will fight, also in Dallas November 13, echoed Tapia?s observation. ?This is only his first day in training and yet he showed power and speed,? Medina, a super-welterweight, assessed. ?While I believe I can be of help in his preparations, the benefit would be mutual as I?m sure I can learn a lot from him in pursuing my career.? Also expressing satisfaction for what he saw was physical conditioning expert Alex Ariza who came here a week ahead of Roach and company. Pacquiao himself expressed delight having experienced the feel of being atop the square arena following a six-month hiatus that saw him campaigned and won a seat in the House of Congress. ?Masaya. Masayang-Masaya ako at sa wakas after along while ay nakatuntong muli ako sa ring. Masaya din dahil kumpleto na ang team ko,? he said in reference to the arrival of Roach and two of his four sparring partners. The team will proceed to Baguio City where Pacquiao will pitching camp for the next six weeks of his preparations in the country before flying to Los Angeles? Wild Card where he will stay for two weeks prior to proceeding to Dallas for the fight. He admitted suffering from a long layoff but quickly added, he?ll be in shape sooner. ?Maraming pang kulang na dapat punuan, pero makaka-recover tayo on time.?
