BELTRAN WARNS DONAIRE NOT TO TAKE ?TYSON? MARQUEZ FOR GRANTED By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Thu, 10 Jun 2010 Well known Mexican promoter Fernando Beltran has warned WBA super flyweight interm champion Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? Donaire (23-1, 15 KO?s) not to take his July 10 opponent Hernan ?Tyson? Marquez (27-1, 20 KO?s) for granted. Donaire had earlier appeared upset that instead of a big name fighter like Fernando Montiel, Eric Morel or Jorge Arce, Top Rank was matching him against Marquez who dropped a fairly lopsided ten round decision to fellow Filipino Richie Mepranum at the Gaylord Hotel in Dallas, Texas last March 12. In fact Donaire had indicated that following his loss to Mepranum who is not a big puncher, Marquez was not a worthy opponent for him. The loss to Mepranum was the power-punching Mexican?s first setback after 20 knockouts in 27 wins who appeared to live up to the ?Tyson? nickname. In an overseas telephone conversation with Viva Sports, Beltran said Donaire ?better not look beyond that fight because it?s a really tough fight for him. I think Marquez has a great chance of beating Donaire. ? He claimed that the loss to Mepranum was a case of ?just one bad night. He?s a better fighter and a really powerful puncher.? Beltran said Marquez had problems making the weight for the flyweight bout with Mepranum but that ?now he is training seriously, inspired by the opportunity.? Donaire?s wife Rachael who is in Manila to open her own line of women?s bags said her husband who is ranked No. 4 in the Ring Magazine pound-for-pound roster was training hard at the Undefeated Gym in San Francisco and would be ready for the July 10 ?Pinoy Power/Latin Fury? card in Puerto Rico which will be telecast by the giant broadcast network ABS-CBN. The exciting fight card will be headlined by the WBO featherweight title bout between champion Juan Manuel ?Juanma? Marquez (28-0, 25 KO?s) and Filipino challenger Bernabe Concepcion (28-3, 15 KO?s). The third Filipino on the card is promising bantam Eden Sonsona who will take on Jonathan Oquendo (18-2, 11 KO?s). Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. |
