Mayol Upbeat Going into June 19 Rematch
By Rene Bonsubre, Jr. PhilBoxing.com Mon, 07 Jun 2010

WBC lt.flyweight champ Rodel Mayol expressed confidence about his chances with twelve days to go before his rematch with Omar Ni?o Romero. In an e-mail communication with this writer, Mayol said that he did not want to sound too overconfident but he would love to knock out his Mexican challenger.
?My training schedule and conditioning is very good as planned. Maayo kaayo ako-a condition. I am healthy mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually. I think that is very important.? He said.
He is now slowing down in his sparring sessions as he is peaking and nearing the date of the fight.
Mayol also said that he is doing good in Los Angeles. ?Life has been good to me, my family and especially my career.? He said he has been praying for a victory and would like to thank all the sportswriters and fans who continued to support him.
Mayol is from Mandaue City and also traces his roots to San Fernando, Cebu. He was one of the five boxers honoured last March during the 28th Cebu Sports Awards.
He is a champion in need of a convincing win. Last February, with forty seconds to go in the third round, Omar Nino delivered a low blow that caused Mayol to drop his guard and then the Mexican floored him with a left hook. Mayol was taken out of the ring on a stretcher while the Mexican camp celebrated thinking they had won. The WBC vice-president Mauricio Sulaiman, however, announced that the bout had been declared a draw.
The rematch will take place June 19 (June 20 Manila Time) in San Juan del Rio, Queretaro, Mexico.
