MAYOL READY FOR REMATCH WITH OMAR NINO ROMERO By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Mon, 07 Jun 2010 World Boxing Council light flyweight champion Rodel ?Batang Mandaue/Kid Rapido? Mayol is ready for his rematch against mandatory challenger Omar Nino Romero in Queretaro, Mexico on June 19 and indications are that the hostility felt towards him by some Mexican fans doesn?t bother him. The feelings stem from two incidents ? the first when he won the title from longtime champion Edgar Sosa over whom Mayol scored a second round TKO on November 21, 2009 after Sosa was crumpled to the canvas after a clash of heads in round one and was groggy when the hard-hitting Filipino trapped him against the ropes and unloaded a flurry of punches giving the referee no choice but to step in and call a halt. A post-fight medical showed that Sosa had suffered a fracture of his left cheekbone which forced him to take a six month break. His handlers felt that it was the head-butt that helped Mayol win. As Sosa took a break to recuperate, Omar Nino Romero won an eliminator against veteran Filipino Juanito Rubillar to force a showdown with Mayol for the title. That title fight was also laced with controversy as Omar Nino Romero caught Mayol with a painful low blow and as referee Vic Drackulich was stepping in to give Mayol a breather, Nino Romero hammered him with a vicious left hook that knocked the champion out cold. After initial confusion where fight fans thought Omar Nino Romero had won by a knockout the WBC secretary general Mauricio Sulaiman very correctly stepped in and ruled the fight a 3rd round technical draw although Mayol?s handlers argued that the Mexican should have been disqualified. This time around Omar Nino Romero says he has trained hard for the rematch and will make sure wins by a knockout. Mayol responded by indicating he would do his talking in the ring. However, Mayol told us ?I can say I am really, really doing great physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually.? He said his weight is ?a little off at the 108 pound limit right now but the timing is perfect as planned? leading to the official weigh-in on the eve of the title defense. Mayol emphasized ?I do not need to starve and dehydrate myself in this case.? Mayol said he and members of his team would have wanted to leave ten days before the fight but that his departure had not been set yet. Mayol told us he would be accompanied by trainer Jesus Arevalo and assistant trainer Jeremiah Quijano. The champion was clearly pleased that his father, Rodrigo Mayol, would be with him for the first time as a world champion and added ?it?s a big inspiration for me.? Cutman, Dr. Ed de la Vega and Mayol?s wife will follow two days before the fight. The WBC in an email to insidesports.ph, Standard Today and Viva Sports said San Juan del Rio , Queretaro (Mexico) is ready f or the ?much expected WBC world championship fight between controversial Philippine champion Rodel Mayol and former world champion Omar Nino? regrettably branding Mayol as controversial instead of stating that he was involved in fights with decisions that were controversial. The WBC stated ?everybody remembers the controversial end of the first time they met when the WBC (in what was a commendable decision) ruled a technical draw at the end of the bout after a meeting with the corresponding committee such verdict was confirmed.? The statement said both fighters ?must prove in the bullfighting ring of San Juan del Rio what they are made of and who deserves the green and gold belt? which is coveted symbol of a WBC champion. Guaranteeing a ?great show this June 19? the WBC concluded ?promising a mind, skills and strategy must be combined to win a fight which is not only about a world championship but also about a thirst for vengeance on one side and to show the world that being a world champion is not a coincidence.?
