READY and confident. That?s how Roberto Racasa and Johann Randall Abrina described their condition in the forthcoming World Memory Championships slated Aug. 21-27 in Guangzhou, China.

?I will do my very best for flag and country,? said Racasa, a former top board player of Polytechnic University of the Philippines? chess team.

Racasa and Abrina will be sponsored by no less than National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) president/chairman Prospero ?Butch? Pichay Jr., Marikina City elect Mayor Del de Guzman, vice mayor elect Fabian Cadiz, Marikina district 1 representative elect Marcy Teodoro and Marikina district 2 representative elect Miro Quimbo, in the event that was conceptualized 19 years back.

The annual competition was instituted to challenge the limits of human memory consisting of 10 events like binary digits (5 minutes/30 min.), numbers (5/30 min), spoken numbers, speed cards, cards (10/30min/1 hour), random words, historic/future dates, names and faces, abstract images and, memorization of new poems.

It would mark the first time that RP would field in representatives, which in this case are Racasa and Abrina.

Racasa and Abrina have started preparation for the previous event and are still looking for some sponsors to back their training and participation with the champion getting the grandmaster title.Marlon Bernardino

About the Sport

The Mind Sport of Memory was founded in 1991 by the inventor of Mind Maps and expert on Mental Literacy, Tony Buzan and Chess Grand Master, Raymond Keene OBE. The Ten Discplines which formed the basis of the first competition are largely unchanged today and have been adopted worldwide as the basis for competitive memory competitions. There are now competitors from 30 countries participating in the sport, all competing to become the next World Memory Champion.

The sport is administered by the World Memory Sports Council which is the governing body for the sport. It compiles the World Rankings, is the custodian of the ten diciplines and ensures fair play worldwide through its Ethics Committee chaired by eight times World Memory Champion, Dominic O'Brien.

Memory is a sport in which everyone can take part. None of the top competitors would claim to be born with a great memory. All of them have learnt all the necessary techniques to develop their skills, and have practiced to a high level to get them to the top of the sport. You can do the same! Why not start today?

Memory is one of the five "Learning Mind Sports" which are Speed Reading, IQ, Creativity, Mind Mapping and Memory. All of them are competitive sports, and collectively they can help anyone to become better in their studies or in the work.
