ARCE CUT IN SPARRING, MOREL FIGHT IN JEOPARDY By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Tue, 25 May 2010 Jorge ?Travieso? Arce?s title fight against Eric Morel of Puerto Rico is in jeopardy after Arce suffered a cut below his right eyebrow which was reportedly three inches deep and required stitches. It was Arce?s first day of sparring against Luis Jorge Lugo at the Montiel Gym in Sinaloa, Mexico when the cut was opened and started to bleed immediately after he was caught by a left hook during an exchange. Doctors said the cut will take three weeks to heal completely which makes it impossible for Arce (54-6-1, 41 KO?s) to be ready to fight WBO bantamweight interim champion Morel (42-2, 21 KO?s) in San Antonio, Texas on June 26. Arce had won the vacant WBO super flyweight title with a 7th round technical decision over Indonesia?s Angky Angkota on January 30, 2010 and successfully defended the title against Cecilio Santos with a 7th round knockout on April 24, this year. Santos is the same fighter who was knocked ouit in the 4th round by world-rated Filipino AJ ?Bazooka? Banal last January 14 at the Waterfront Hotel and Casino in Cebu City in the Philippines. Arce who also suffered a cut in the same spot during his fight with Santos said he will resume training once he is cleared by the doctor.Morel who is nicknamed ?Little Hands of Steel? is a 34 year old Puerto Rican who won the WBO bantamweight interim title with a somewhat controversial split decision over former two division world champion Gerry Penalosa at the Las Vegas Hilton last February 13. Arce, looking to win his fourth world title against Morel said the accident was ?very unfortunate? and he was :very frustrated and disappointed? but stressed that these things happen in training. Arce said the doctor informed him he could not spar for the next two to three weeks and as a result ?its logically impossible to make up the time for the June 26 date? even as he expressed the hope that the title fight could be re-scheduled. Arce added, ?I know that against the Puerto Rican I have every chance to win my fourth belt.? Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. |
