Buhain off to WBC Convention in Spain
By Salven L. Lagumbay PhilBoxing.com Fri, 30 Sep 2005
Games and Amusements Board chairman Eric Buhain will be attending the World Boxing Council 43rd Annual World Convention all by his lonesome, but that wont stop him from taking the cudgels for Filipino boxers when the annual conclave officially starts at the Hotel Palacio, located at the La Linea de la Concepcion in Cadiz, Spain starting October 2.
Buhain will not be joined by his two commissioners in the trip, in observance of the government's austerity measures. Normally, in the past WBC Conventions, the GAB chair is accompanied by the two commissioners and the boxing division chief in the trip.
Instead, Buhain left yesterday alone, although GAB physician Naser Cruz, who will take part in the medical seminars during the 6-day event, is expected to fly today for Spain to take part in the deliberations.
?The backbone of the WBC in the last quarter century has been safety, and it has been the WBC that has changed the world of boxing as most, if not all, of its medical basic guidelines are today implemented all over the world," said the WBC in a release to the media.
Buhain is also expected to lobby for possible title cracks for the following boxers who are highly-rated by the WBC: Rodel Mayol (WBC no. 1 minifly), Juanito Rubillar (WBC no. 2 junior fly), Diosdado Gabi (WBC no. 5 flyweight), Malcolm Tunacao (WBC no. 7 superfly), Manny Pacquiao (WBC no 2 superfeatherweight), and Randy Suico (WBC no. 3 superfeatherweight).
