PHILBOXING EXCLUSIVE: PI?OL TO PROMOTE CEBU BOXERS By Salven L. Lagumbay PhilBoxing.com Thu, 29 Sep 2005 In a major development for local boxing, Cebu's Stonewall Boxing Gym has inked an agreement with North Cotabato Governor Emmanuel Pi?ol for a promotional deal that will allow the latter to promote the fights for the Liloan-based group's remaining top boxers. Last September 22, Pi?ol met with Stonewall founder Terry Carter, who was accompanied by partner Joy Ouano, and laid down the nitty-gritty of the promotional deal over dinner at the posh Waterfront Cebu City Hotel. The deal centered on Stonewall's remaining three boxers--Wyndel Janiola, Mercito Gesta, and Alvin Mundala--as Pi?ol vowed to keep them active for possible crack at titles in the future. As a direct result of the promotional deal, the North Cotabato Governor, who will produce an upcoming television program over at ABS-CBN in partnership with pound-for-pound superstar Manny Pacquiao set to be launched in December, revealed yesterday that he has already booked the undefeated Gesta to fight veteran Rolly Mandahinog, RP no. 8 flyweight, on October 22 underneath the "Fight for Love" card topbilling Fernando Montilla against Dexter Delada. Pi?ol, who also has an existing boxing program called "Battle Royale" aired on Sundays, further revealed that the world-ranked Janiola and Mundala will be seeing action in his next card set for November 12 in Baguio City. As for the new boxing program at ABS-CBN, the country's biggest television network, Pi?ol is optimistic this will usher in new opportunities for local fighters, as well as afford them with the type of exposure never done before. Pacquiao, who met with Pi?ol and this writer regarding the ABS-CBN project when he was in Cebu on the way to Tokyo, immediately gave his two-thumbs up for the proposal, and even hinted that the project will be huge and vowed to give it his all-out support. "I am a Kapamilya, and I will be very happy to lend my expertise and time for this planned boxing program over at my station. Malaking bagay ito," Pacquiao said.
