Labanza beats Gelig again in Mandaue By Rene Bonsubre, Jr. PhilBoxing.com Mon, 19 Apr 2010 Eman Labanza of Balamban, Cebu won by unanimous decision over Romano Gelig of Jagna, Bohol last Sunday evening to cap the three day boxing festival held at the Mandaue City Plaza Square. It was an entertaining six round superbantamweight scrap which saw both fighters taking turns pummelling each other to the body and head. Labanza?s body attack was more consistent and he shifted his focus to the head in the last two rounds. The scores were ? 60-54, 59-55 and 59-55. This fight was actually a rematch for the two southpaws who engaged in a well fought brawl last September 2009 in Balamban, Cebu with Labanza winning by unanimous decision in six rounds. Zaldy Aroa of Bantayan Island, Cebu won by split technical decision over Marjun Baliguat of Cebu City in a four round flyweight contest. The southpaw Aroa?s left straight was on target in the first two rounds. In the third round a flurry from Baliguat buckled the knees of Aroa. But an accidental clash of heads stopped the action as Aroa sustained a deep cut above the left eyebrow. The fight was stopped and the scorecards read 29-28 on two judges for Aroa and one judge had it 29-28 for Baliguat. Kotsky Ebalang of Cagayan de Oro beat Romero Urpanel of the IPI gym of Mandaue City by unanimous decision in a four round superflyweight bout. Ebalang landed the cleaner punches and was steadier down the stretch. The scores ? 40-36, 40-36 and 39-37. Welbeth Loberanis of Mandaue City survived a knockdown in the second round to win by unanimous decision over Rommel Banquirego of Cebu City in a 4 round flyweight brawl. The three judges? scorecards all read 38-37 for Loberanis who was making his professional debut. The four professional bouts were featured at the end of the action-packed three day amateur slugfest billed as the 2nd Mayor Jonas C. Cortes Cup is held at the Mandaue City Plaza Square. It was organized by the Mandaue City local government, Mandaue City Sports Commission in coordination with ALA Promotions and was offered free to the public from April 16 to 18.
