MAIDANA KO'S CAYO IN 6TH

PhilBoxing.com

Las Vegas, NV:- Marcos Maidana, the pride of Santa Fe, Argentina kept his Interim WBA Super Lightweight belt via stunning kayo of Victor Cayo, the previously undefeated slugger from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

The exciting bout which was the main event put up by Golden Boy Promotions at the Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel in this city lived up to its billing.

It was exciting from the get go with each fighter giving and receiving vicious blows. In round 2, just as the bell sounded ending the round, Maidana threw an unintentional late shot that dropped Cayo. Referee Joe Cortez declared it a knockdown and counted to eight drawing a loud protest from Team Cayo.

The end for Cayo came at 1:38 of the sixth round following tremendous combinations by Maidana that landed everywhere. But it was a vicious body shot in the solar plexus that dropped Cayo for the count.

With the victory, Maidana upped his record to 28-1-0, 27 KO while Cayo dropped to 24-1-0, 15 KO.

It took Cayo several minutes to recover from the body shot and being so closed to our photo position, we could hear him complain to the doctor about having lots of pain in the midsection of his body. Luckily however, he was able to walk out of the ring in his own power.

In the supporting main event, Joan Guzman, the cocky lightweight from Brooklyn, NY won a worthless split decision over Ali Funeka of East London, South Africa.

The Guzman-Funeka was supposed to be for the vacant IBF Lightweight title but Guzman came in 9 pounds overweight yesterday making him ineligible to win the title even if he won.

Guzman dropped Funeka in round 6th but the South African got up immediately and continued to give Guzman a good fight up to the last bell.

The fight was so close and the scores of the two judges which were both 114-113 reflected it well. However, just like in many past fights in this City, another judge scored it with a 116-111 which we felt did not accurately describe the fight.

The rest of the fight results are as follows:

Daniel Jacobs ( 19-0-0, 15 KO) of Brooklyn, New York beat Jose Rodrigues (12-5-1, 6KO) of Sucre, Columbia. Jacobs dropped Rodrigues twice in round one and just before round two got started, the ring doctor upon checking on Rodrigues declared him unfit to continue and advised referee Jay Nady to call off the fight.

In a battle between two junior middle weights, Jarnell Charlo (11-0-0, 5KO) beat Gerardo Prieto (6-9-1) of Provo, Utah by unanimous decision. The scores were 80-71, 79-72 and 79-72.

Omar Figueroa (9-0-0, 8KO) kept his record clean via UD over Edgar Portillo ( 6-4-1, 4KO) of Midland, Texas. The scores were 60-54, 58-56 and 58-56.

In the curtain raiser, Diego Chavez ( 14-0-0, 12 KO) won via a UD over Edvan dos Santos ( 10-9-1, 7KO) of Boca Raton, Florida via a UD. The scores were 59-55, 58-56, 60-54.
