TWO EXCELLENT TITLE FIGHTS AT ELORDE ANNUAL AWARDS BANQUET By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Wed, 24 Mar 2010 Two excellent title fights will mark the Gabriel “Flash” Elorde Annual Awards banquet at the Sofitel Plaza Hotel Harbour Tent on Thursday which marks the 75th birth anniversary of the former world junior lightweight champion who reigned for almost seven-and-a-half years. With pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao and “Fighter of the Decade” in attendance as special guest, the women’s minimum weight title fight and the Philippine featherweight championship bout will serve to enhance an evening where champions and prominent figures in boxing will be honored. In the main event 28 year old southpaw Vinvin Rufino (17-8-3, 7 KO’s) will defend his title against undefeated Adonis Aguelo (8-0-1, 4 KO’s) while classy 24 year old Gretchen Abaniel (8-1, 2 KO’s)will defend her Women’s International Boxing Association minimum weight title against 19 year old Thai challenger Fahpratan Looksaikongdin (7-1, 0 KO’s) in a ten round bout. Rufino is coming off a terrific showing in an Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation title fight in Japan, dropping a split decision to Naoki Matsuda last March 6, 2010 in Tokyo with indications that his performance would earn him a well deserved rematch. Aguelo won the vacant Philippine Boxing Federation title last November 20, 2009 with a unanimous ten round decision over Eric Macas and will face his stiffest test against the southpaw Rufino. Abaniel won the vacant WIBA minimum weight title with a ten round unanimous decision over Thailand’s Nongbua Lookprai –Aree on March 25, 2009 at last year’s Elorde awards night. Fahpratan is coming off a 4th round TKO loss to hard-hitting Korean girl Ju Hee Kim in a battle for the WIBA Women’s International Boxing Association light flyweight title. Former Australian boxer Terry Mogg who handles Abaniel told us she is “in great form and has sparred 100 rounds against male professional minimum weight boxers and fighters from the Philippine navy. “ Mogg added “look for a very strong showing.” In a super featherweight ten round bout promising Erickson Origenes (7-1-1, 5 KO’s) will face veteran John De Guiao (6-9-3, 1 KO’s) while the grandsons of “Flash” Elorde will also see action on the card which will be telecast on the top-rated weekly boxing show “The Main Event” telecast over RPN 9 at 1:00 p.m. on Saturdays. The Elorde brothers should have no trouble in disposing of their opponents as lightweight Juan Martin Elorde (9-0, 2 KO’s) takes on Kan Hamonkol of Thailand who will be making his debut as a pro while super bantamweight Juan Miguel Elorde (6-0, 1 KO) will clash with Anthony Balubar who according to boxrec.com has lost all his three fights so far.
