SONNY GONZALES KO’S KOREAN IN 4TH ROUND By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Wed, 03 Mar 2010 Super bantamweight Sonny Gonzales has scored an impressive 4th round knockout over Korea’s Jong Won Park in the main event of the “Ring War in Davao del Sur” fight card at the Don Mariano elementary school in Digos promoted by Abad Santos City Mayor and boxing manager Zander Khan in cooperation with Eorde International Sports Promotions and Davao del Sur vice governor Fely Latasa. Lito Delos Reyes in an email to insidesports.ph said Gonzales connected with several body shots and used his reach advantage to keep Jong Won Park at bay from the start of the scheduled ten round bout. Boxrec.com shows Jong Won Park had a record of 3-1-1 with no knockouts but its records are not always accurate because of unfiled fight results. Gonzales who is ranked No. 1 by the Philippine Boxing Federation and No. 6 in the Philippine rankings of the Games and Amusements Board connected with two stiff left straights at the start if the fight but the Korean came back with a flurry of shots to the body. According to the report of delos Reyes, Gonzales kept using his jab and finally caught the Korean opponent with a solid blow to the mid-section during an exchange on the inside to knock him out. Gonzales who hails from the Tiger City Gym in Mandaluyong told delos Reyes “I really wanted to knock out my opponent” even as he improved his record to 17-12-3 with 8 knockouts. Gonzales’ recent appearance against Edgar Gabejan on Viva Sports top rated weekly boxing show “The Main Event” sponsored by Tanduay, the NO. 1 Rhum at the Mandaluyong City Gym will be telecast on Saturday, March 6 on RPN 9 at 1:00 p.m. A planned exhibition bout between WBC Intercontinental champion Balweg Bangoyan against Jezxar Angcahas had to be called off because the canvas was slippery and dangerous after some rain. Bangoyan who is managed by Mayor Zander Khan faces WBC super bantamweight champion Toshiaki Nishioka in a title fight in Tokyo on April 30.Zander Khan who is running for govermnor in the May 10 elections said “the canvas was slippery and its hard for us to risk injury to Balweg” in view of his forthcoming title fight.
