DONAIRE WANTS TO DESTROY GUERRERO By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Tue, 09 Feb 2010 Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire wants to destroy Mexico’s tough Gerson Guerrero when they clash in the main event of Top Rank Promotions exciting “Pinoy Power III/Latin Fury 13” fight card at the Las Vegas Hilton on February 14, Valentine’s Day, Manila Time. Donaire believes he has had a near perfect training camp and told boxing writer Chris Cozzone “If this camp has shown me anything, it’s that I need to destroy my opponent.” Looking forward to his fourth fight in Las Vegas, the WBA super flyweight interim champion revealed that he has never been 100 percent when fighting in Las Vegas but vowed things will change on Saturday saying “This time around, I’m 100% and confident. I’m going to be floating on air and going with the flow. This camp has brought out the best in me and I’m going to fight without inactivity and distractions.” The “Pinoy Power III/Latin Fury 13” card will be telecast in the Philippines as part of a two-year deal between Top Rank promoter Bob Arum and the giant broadcasting network ABS-CBN. The telecast over the pre-eminent Channel 2 will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday with a replay over Studio 23 at 8:30 p.m. and another replay over Channel 2 on its popular “Sunday’s Best” program. Donaire was hardly active in 2008 after winning the IBF/IBO flyweight title via the “Knockout of the Year” when he stopped Australian Vic Darchinyan with a cracking left hook in the 5th round to take Darchinyan’s titles on July 7, 2007. He defended his title successfully three times with an 8th round TKO over Luis Maldonado, a comparatively disappointing 6th round TKO over South Africa’s Moruti Mthalane and a 4th round TKO over previously undefeated Raul Martinez on April 19, 2009 at the famed Araneta Coliseum in the Philippines. A bout with dengue fever sidelined “The Filipino Flash” but he recovered well and is raring to get into the ring. Former world champion Robert Garcia who trains Donaire told us that what has impressed him the most besides his speed and power is his footwork and his movement which he is bound to need in battling the hard-punching Guerrero. Donaire himself told us in a recent conversation that he would like to fight Mexican warrior Jorge Arce and then take on Drachinyan in a rematch which his former promoter Gary Shaw who promotes Darchinyan told us could happen as early as July provided Donaire and Darchinyan get past their next opponents. Donaire’s manager Cameron Dunkin is looking even beyond that mentioning the names of WBO bantamweight champion Fernando Montiel, super bantamweight champion Israel Vasquez and featherweight Juan Manuel “Juanma” Lopez. American trainer Rick Stehely who steered “Fighter of the Decade” and reigning pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao to his first world title – the WBC flyweight championship which Pacquiao won with a stunning 8th round knockout over Thai hero Chatchai Sasakul - told www.insidesports.ph, Standard Today and Viva Sports that Donaire could win at least four world titles and maybe follow in the footsteps of Pacquiao and win six. However, there are those who have cautioned Donaire and Dunkin not to look too far down the road and ignored Guerrero who could be a threat because of his punching power. Donaire himself told us that Guerrero was “tough and strong” while he told Cozzone “ I’ll try not to look ahead of this guy. He is a big threat. Anyone with a high kayo percentage is always a threat.” Dunkin conceded that the Mexican “can punch so he’s always a threat” but added that Donaire is “too fast and too smart.” Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. |
