WBC MAY STRIP MAYOL OF WORLD TITLE By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Thu, 28 Jan 2010 Mayol. The World Boxing Council may strip light flyweight champion Rodel Mayol of his title for his failure to honor the contract he signed with Mexican boxing promoter Fausto Daniel Garcia to defend his title against mandatory challenger and former champion Omar Nino Romero. WBC president Jose Sulaiman and secretary general Mauricio Sulaiman told us they hadn’t received a response from the handlers of Mayol who are pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao and his adviser Michael Koncz despite several communications sent to them. The WBC executives sought our assistance and we were able to relay their concerns to Koncz who apparently contacted them and requested that Mayol be given a chance to stage a voluntary title defense on the Pacquiao-Joshua Clottey WBO welterweight title fight at the Dallas Cowboys stadium on March 13. Koncz indicated on Wednesday however, that they are trying to work out an agreement to stage the mandatory title defense on “The Event” undercard and should know whether the WBC and Mexican promoter Fausto Daniel Garcia would agree to the proposal. Sulaiman himself said earlier Wednesday that after waiting for several months for the compliance by Mayol of his mandatory defense the WBC will not approve the fight and ”will give him eight days to comply with his defense against Omar Nino Romero or the world title will be declared vacant.” In fact the WBC Board of Governors have been asked to vote to order an immediate fight for the vacant title in case Mayol’s handlers don’t comply with their contractual obligations within the deadline. The WBC president was forced to act after promoter Garcia sent a legal letter to Sulaiman “demanding immediate compliance with the contract signed by the new champion Mayol.” In his letter Garcia Mayol and his handlers had failed to comply with their commitment and he (the promoter) “is close to losing his TV date on February 27 which was scheduled against official contender and No.1 Omar Nino Romero. “ It was pointed out that the Mexican promoter had selected Mayol for a voluntary defense by former champion Edgar Sosa who he claimed “suffered a barbaric three fractures of the cheekbone due to a head-butt” in the first round and lost by a second round TKO.
