BAUTISTA GETS TOP CONDITIONING FROM FORTUNE By Salven L. Lagumbay PhilBoxing.com Tue, 23 Aug 2005 Manny Pacquiao's personal conditioning coach, Justin Fortune, is now at the helm of WBO Asia Pacific bantam champ Rey Bautista's physical conditioning as the latter plunges into the remaining two weeks before he takes on Felix Murillo on September 10 at the Staples Center underneath the Erik Morales-Manny Pacquiao double-header. The 19-year-old Bautista, now training at the Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles, has so far sparred some 54 rounds of sparring against a variety of Latino fighters, said the fighter's American agent Michael Koncz. "Justin Fortune puts Rey through a variety of vigorous conditioning and strength drills on a daily basis which in turn is putting Rey in top physical form. Also on Tuesdays and Thursdays (none sparring days), Rey is running 3 1/2 miles on hilly terrain. The remaining days which are sparring days, Rey jogs on relatively flat terrain and is doing 5 1/5 miles in thirty-five (35) minutes," said Koncz in an e-mail to Bautista's manager, Cebu boxing patron Tony Aldeguer. Among those who serve as Bautista's sparmates are junior flyweight Brian Viloria, bantamweight Jorge Alberto Diaz, who is also a regular sparring partner of Manny Paquiao, Brazilian flyweight Jose Albuquerque and super-featherweight Heder Rivas. Viloria and Diaz possess good had speed, head and foot movement, thus allowing Bautista to sharpen his techniques in cutting the ring off, utilizing his jab to back them in position along the ropes and corners for combinations to the body. The Brazilian has good upper body movement, but has a great tendency to use rough house tactics including frequent holding. Bautista is reportedly adapting well in dealing with this style of fighter. Rivas, who outweighs Bautista and is a pure slugger, allows the latter to utilize his jab, as well as his foot and upper body movement and, and to be more cautious and selective on the combinations and power shots that he unloads.
