HATTON'S DAD SAYS YOU CAN'T BLAME MANNY IF HE FILES A LAWSUIT By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Sat, 26 Dec 2009 Former IBO light welterweight champion Ricky “The Hitman” Hatton’s father, Ray Hatton, says pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao has every right to file a lawsuit against those individuals he believes have been maligning him by alleging that he was on performance-enhancing drugs, without providing any proof. In an overseas telephone conversation with www.insidesports.ph, Standard Today and Viva Sports, Hatton whose son Ricky suffered a devastating second round knockout at the hands of Pacquiao last May said “to be honest, you can’t blame him (Pacquiao) can you really” if he files charges. Hatton said “Manny doesn’t want anything to detract from his fabulous performances” which Hatton himself praised. However, he said he would be disappointed if the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight didn’t happen because it’s a fight he wants to see and one that would be “quite an intriguing fight.” Respected boxing writer Kieran Mulvaney who has appeared on some of the pre-fight TV shows leading to Pacquiao’s big fights in Las Vegas and also writes for ESPN as well as Reuters news agency told us “there is no evidence that Pacquiao is using anything, but the Mayweathers are trying to create an element of doubt to undermine Pacquiao’s confidence and preparation and to provide an alibi if Manny wins.” Mulvaney noted that Pacquiao’s counter-proposal put forward by Arum was, as far as he is aware, “more than any fighter has prepared to submit to voluntarily, but Mayweathers will portray it as if Pacquiao has something to hide.” Mulvaney added “if this was really about working out a solution they would have worked out a solution. The fact that Mayweather had his people put out a statement shows this for what it really is – an attempt to cast doubt on Pacquiao and get under his skin. But as far as the latter goal is concerned, I don’t think it will work.” Mulvaney conceded that “unfortunately it puts Manny in an awkward position because if he walks away not only would he lose a lot of money, it would appear to the casual observer as if he was indeed afraid to submit to random testing. For what it is worth though I think this makes no difference. The fight gets made but Floyd does what he wnted to – place a seed of doubt in the minds of Manny and the fans.” Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. |
